Time Out Paris Eating and Drinking: 2005/6 (Time Out Guides) Review

Time Out Paris Eating and Drinking: 2005/6 (Time Out Guides)
Average Reviews:

This is a great book for someone who is really looking to sample the restaurants of Paris. It is divided by types of cuisine, but also has a great section you can flip through to find a great place to go on a romantic date, or for the best live jazz, or even the best decor. The only things I'm not satisfied with are the maps, which are small and complicated, and the fact that most restaurants listed are on the pricier side. There is an entire "Budget" section, but that seems to be the only place where the reviwers sought out food that is affordable on an every-day basis. If you're spending a long time in Paris, this is a great buy. The maps won't be a drawback for you if you have another street map (don't try to rely on this one!), but then again, this is a restaurant guide, not a guidebook. There is an amazing array of restaurants, bistros, bars, and cafes reviewed in mouth-watering detail.

The Private Lives of the Impressionists Review

The Private Lives of the Impressionists
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One common lack in the multitude of books on the French Impressionist painters is that most books concentrate on the individual artists, or at least on one artist at a time, and do little to connect the artists in the context of their private lives. A few concentrate on correspondence between artists, but don't draw it all together. There have been some notable exceptions (such as Rewald's almost encyclopedic "The History of Impressionism"), but I think that for a relatively short intimate and interconnected history of the Impressionists Sue Roe's "The Private lives of the Impressionists" stands out. I was literally caught up in the story from the start (even though I have read several other versions) and learned a great deal about who knew who when and how various painters influenced others in the movement. Here Manet grumbles about his confusion with a new painter- Monet. Cezanne wonders in an out of the group, always apparently angry and paranoid. Monet is chased by creditors and has difficulties with his parents over his mistress, a problem also for several other male Impressionists. Berthe Marisot is alternately wooed and rejected by Manet (despite his own commitments). Pissarro extols his socialist ideas and various important painters- Degas, Bazille, Courbet, Caillebotte, Cassatt, Renoir, Sisley, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Marisot, Cezanne and others work together, get angry with each other, fight for recognition and daily bread, and have romances (or not in the case of Bazille). Indeed we see them as real people, not geniuses, with real problems.
The Impressionists made up a varied lot, who's main bond was painting, but who ran from rich to poor, socialist to conservative, and shy to outrageous. However, they completely changed Western art during their lives and difficulties, including the numerous rejections by the established art community. In addition most had to each deal in their own way with the deadly Franco-Prussian War and resultant revolt of the Communards.
If you want to read the unvarnished overview of the artists who altered the history of art in France during the last half of the Nineteenth Century, without having it encyclopedic in size, this would be it!

I spent a month in Cape Town and this guide was always by my side. Excellent guide with wonderful endearing side bars on locals-it gives you a great sense of Cape Town and its local flavour. All the sections are dead on. I found the dining and shopping extremely helpful with its guide to what is uniquely Capetonian. This is by far the best guide to Cape Town out now. The writers and contributors for this guide should be commended.

These are amazing stories told by an incredible author. Rivers makes the Bible more understandable and interesting to women through this book. It is beautifully written and draws you to the heart of God more and more each day. The scripture and questions at the end of each "book" are great for individual devotions or Bible studies. They are great to dive deeper into the Bible for further understanding and application. This is a must-have, along with any other Francine Rivers books. My favorite--Redeeming Love.

The Dog Lover's Companion to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore: The Inside Scoop on Where to Take Your Dog (Dog Lover's Companion Guides) Review

The Dog Lover's Companion to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore: The Inside Scoop on Where to Take Your Dog (Dog Lover's Companion Guides)
Average Reviews:

This is one of my favorite books ever. Really. I moved to the D.C. area with my lab three years ago, and while we were used to having dozens of places to go for various reasons or times, I didn't know where to begin to find good places to take her around our new home. This book was a godsend for finding fun places to go, especially because I found the reviews to give a me a very accurate idea of what sort of place we were going, including what sort of "feel" it might have for dog-friendliness. Some of the features of the book I have found extremely helpful are:
* Birds-eye maps showing where the reviewed locations are in the counties covered (perfect for finding a park near odd places that I might run errands)
* How strict the leash law is followed (this is a biggie for me -- while the authors point out excellent reasons to use the leash, they very helpfully suggest where we can get away without it)
* Rough idea how crowded the area in question might be, and how easy or difficult to get to (varies of course by time of day and season)
* Whether there's a place for doggie swimming
In my area (Sterling/Ashburn, VA) I've found the book to be amazingly comprehensive for my local and outlying areas, and find that the park descriptions have always given me a pretty accurate idea what to expect. The book covers a wide enough range (including some pseudo-local vacation destinations) that I've used it on countless occasions to find nice stopover while on short trips outside my "home turf". Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys finding varied places to visit with their pups.

A check on google.com reaches bibliocook.com, which indicates that the recipes in Paradiso Year: Autumn and Winter are selected from Paradiso Seasons. There is also a Spring and Summer version, also selected from Paradiso Seasons. The new covers are lovely, but if the recipes are the same, you probably won't want to buy Paradiso Year and Paradiso Seasons together. If the Paradiso books appeal to you, you might also like the cookbook from Cafe Flora, which looks wonderful, or Spice : Flavors of the Eastern Mediterranean, which is not vegetarian but has many inspirational vegetarian recipes.

Time Out Madrid (Time Out Guides) Review

Time Out Madrid (Time Out Guides)

Summary: Sufficient to have with you while in Madrid.
Review: Sufficient information on sites, restaurants, arts and entertainment (nightlife, bars, etc.), excursions, shopping and maps. Couple walking maps help and the level of detail is sufficient to plan your trip or take the book with you while you are walking around. The book is not hardcover, but a little to bit to fit in your average pant pocket unless you are wearing cargo pants.
Why you should trust me: This is one of six travel books I have used this year alone in Europe and the Middle East. This is the only TimOut book of the six.

Madrid has gone from shanty town to imperial capital in the last seven centuries. The local writers of Time Out Madrid assist travelers in seeing the city as a native, suggesting where to stay, eat, shop and experience its cultural offerings. Famed for its wild nights and lazy days, Madrid provides a whole lot more, from spectacular opera productions, chirpy folkloric zarzuela, and cutting-edge cuisine to ancient, tiled tabernas, designer-shoe shopping, and numerous flea markets. Written by resident journalists, Time Out Madrid also covers the artistic jewels housed in the Prado, Thyssen, and Reina Sofia, as well as the etiquette of watching a bullfight or joining in with a flamenco performance, as well as where to stay and how to escape the city heat. Also included are the intriguing stories behind some of the city's best-known paintings, where to find gourmet tapas, the yoga centers, spas, and Turkish baths. Climbing, skiing, and hang-gliding are all within reach of the city, and suggested trips out of town are also recommended.

I ordered this book thinking it was written by and for use in the United States. However upon receiving it I realized quickly that it was written by and for use in the United Kingdom. Therefore a large portion is related to their terms, currency and their particular health departments. It is probably a great book for their use but not for here in the states.

This little book saved us more than once on our trip to Russia. It is hard to find English-speaking people who can give directions over there so if we were lost we just showed the picture of where we wanted to go and were guided. Also when looking for churches or other buildings it's the only way to know exactly what it is you're looking at since there aren't English signs. For our next trips we'll definitely purchase these guides again.

Good general guidebook, especially for attractions, points of interest, etc. Like any printed guidebook, however, restaurants have such high turnover nowadays that some have gone out of business, hours of operation change, etc. Especially I liked that directions were given in terms of public transportation: which subway stop and/or streetcar to use and direction to walk from the subway. Also, the included removeable map was clearer and easier to see than the one I purchased separately.

Lonely Planet Vienna (City Travel Guide) Review

Lonely Planet Vienna (City Travel Guide)
Average Reviews:

Found book to be really useful to pack in as much as possible during a brief 2.5 day visit. Pull out map particularly useful. Felt coffee shops are over rated in the book with poor service, crowded even though we were out of season (early March), and not particularly good coffee. No need to go to the ones mentioned in the book as others offer similar or better quality and less crowded. Chcolatiers are also over rated and over priced. Visit Belgium instead. Museums/art galleries are essential and excellent, as is the purchase of standing tickets for the opera. Available at 6:30pm on day of performance. Don't expect to be comfortable but location is great and only 3 euros. The description of the Sunday mass with Vienna Philharmonic and Boys Choir makes it a must see and strongly recommend.

Time Out Cheap Eats in London (Time Out Guides) Review

Time Out Cheap Eats in London (Time Out Guides)
Average Reviews:

This book is an excellent source for anyone who wants to find good, cheap restaurants in and around London. Having already been there many times, I just picked this book up to help plan my next trip (in just over a month!)and have found it to be invaluable. I even see a number of our favorite restuarants already listed! Here are some reasons as to why I am in love with this book:
1. Size - it is pocket-sized - perfect to bring along on the trip with you without being bulky like many travel books. Can even fit in a purse to carry around with you on a daily basis while in London.
2. Organization - The book is divided into sections of London, complete with maps, so you will always be able to locate a restuarant near to where you are. The maps help you locate streets and restaurant locations, and there is also an index if you want to look up a restaurant by name, not location.
3. Authority - Time Out is a trusted source of info, and they provide excellent detailed reviews of each restaurant. Furthermore, their reviews are annonymous - they don't announce who they are at the restaurants they review, and they pay in full like any other customer.
4. Coupons! Need I say more? :) There are three 25% off vouchers to use at about 10 different specific restaurants.
I am an avid traveler and I have to say this is one of the best guides I have come across. It is organized, informational and compact. It is great for the budget traveler or for a regular traveler who wants to try some of the good, less expensive restaurants London has to offer. The only drawback is its limited use...the coupns expire in May 2006, and like any other dining guide, it is only useful if the establishments stay in business.
