Canyon Cafe, Sam's Cafe and Desert Fire: Bringing the Southwest Experience Home
Average Reviews:

I have eaten in a Canyon Cafe many times and never had a bad meal.Whenever I pull out Bringing the Southwest...Home, my family knows we're in for a treat! It's not just about the South Texas Tortilla Soup or the Pecan Crusted Crab Cakes with Chipotle Remoulade...Mmmmmmm!!! For every season there are occasion menus, like Los Dias de Los Muertos, an Aztec celebration of life that offers a feast of Chicken Chile Rellenos with Tomatillo-Avocado Salsa, Venison Posole, Noche Buena Salad, Fire-Grilled Turkey Skewers with Papaya-Mango Salsa & Cucumber Mint Dipping Sauce, Braised Buffalo Short Ribs in Mustard Mole Sauce, and a Mini Bunuelo Sundae Bar. Unlike most cookbooks, it takes out the guess work by presenting recipes from the appetizer to the dessert, up to four menus per season. The book comes in its own colorful jacket, making it the perfect gift, too! AND, I can find all of the ingredients in right in my neighborhood supermarket. My relatives just love it!!!

This book, just like the other 5 was brill, i've read them 4 times! I'm just upset they're the only 6! In this book, Joe and Debbie finally make it, but only due to her green blooded andriod and a hurricane! Like the others, it's light hearted and witty, and a cool read for the summer. If there was anymore i'd definately buy them!

I drove across Canada in the summer of '98. It was a great trip, but sometimes the driving got boring, I got sick of all the CDs I'd brought along, and there was no good music on the radio. However, CBC was everywhere, and generally kept me amused. Dead Dog Cafe Comedy Hour was the highlight. I thought it was hilarious, and I'm not even Canadian.

Hello I was born and raised in Florence and went to school with several Rocchios. I was wondering if this book only comes in the Kindle form because unfortunately I don not have one but am very interested in getting a copy of this book.

I have always admired my mother's bull dog determination as a divorced, single woman supporting herself and two kids through a business of her own as a professional baker. Against various types of odds for a woman in 1949, when my brother was around five years old, and I was two, our mother, Marge Hudnall, borrowed $6,000 from a local bank in her small town of Florence, Colorado (around 3,000 population at that time), opened a bakery, and repaid the loan in two years.Through that venture, she accomplished more than earning a living, as I discovered when I interviewed her for this story, and she automatically began recalling events which were news to me and almost news to her. I typed furiously, in my personal shorthand, as my Mom began talking, seeming to fall into a trance of her personal and professional history. For several nonstop hours, the interview flowed on its own so freely, I didn't have to pause typing to ask more than a few questions. Within the historic ambiance which Mom described in our interview, Sloppy Joes were originated in the 50's in The Malt Shop Bakery and Bus Depot in Florence, Colorado. Margie's bakery story, “COAL & COCA-COLA" proves the origin or that juicy sandwich and more. Read it while it steams, as an upgraded KINDLE edition with a photo essay included, placing it into the present and counting of our New Millennium.*List of Linda Shelnutt's VISCERAL HISTORIES*A Mining Series based around Florence, Colorado:1. The Price of Black Diamonds2. Coal Dust in Their Hands3. Dark Diamond Twilight(Upgraded from an Amazon Short into a KINDLE edition w/photos)4. The Last Lunch Box5. I Worked6. This is Someone's Loved One: An Undertaker's View7. We Work All Our Lives and What Do We Get?8. Coal & Coca-Cola(Upgraded from an Amazon Short into a KINDLE edition w/photos)*The above 8 stories are currently available as Amazon Shorts.Linda Shelnutt is upgrading (slowly) each of these stories for KINDLE publication. As currently planned, the Kindle editions will have newly designed covers, and photo series added (with corrections made of any typos spotted in the Shorts versions at the time of Kindle publications).*VISCERAL HISTORY is my term for true stories told from the gut, usually featuring the perspective of the author in addition to one or a small number of individuals. Rather than attempting to give cool, detached accounts of historic events (whether panoramic public accounts or private biographical vignettes); the focus is purposely placed on emotional reactions (of the subjects, and the author's in empathy) to what has been lived through, experienced, or observed. The purpose is to show the subjects in a heroic light, no matter how seemingly simple their lives may be.No life is simple.A philosophical treatise could be written on the ways history can be recorded, from the coolest clarity and accuracy of trained historians; to the warmest skewing and heart healing dramatizations of salt of the earth men and women. Sometimes the coolest records are innocently (or purposely) politically skewed; while the warm stories, told and retold, are so gut level honest, they remain uncannily close to the truth of life.Does anyone ever see a true picture of reality? Does a true physical reality exist beyond conscious experience of it? These questions are posed by philosophy, metaphysics, and quantum physics..., i.e., if a tree falls in the forest, does the tree actually fall if no one is there to observe it? Is the forest there?Fortunately for me, I'm not an investigative reporter assigned and paid to dig for dirt.I'm a literary mirror for the good and the true in the human heart. That, I believe exists.Respectfully Submitted,Linda G. Shelnutt

Weird Stories from the Lonesome Cafe Review

Weird Stories from the Lonesome Cafe

I read this short chapter book while passing some time in an elementary library and was delighted with the genuine humor and the breezy writing of this original tale. Adults who read this story aloud to their children will enjoy the humor as much as their kids, and readers who have graduated to chapter books will find this one funny and entertaining.
I'm always impressed when I come across a fresh storyline in a children's book, and this tale of the mysterious (yet strangely familiar!) visitors to the Lonesome Cafe is definitely an original idea.

It's where today's "quiet action" is-convivial coffeeshops and laid-back cafs, much preferred to noisy bars and discos, especially then the settings are designed with as much panache as theones that fill these inviting pages.Ninety-eight projects, some with floor plans, showcase both chic, contemporary looks and newly "old" traditional looks in coffee houses,up-scale food shops, and fun, theme-oriented cafs, with suchevocative names as Second Cup, The Mill, Coffee Klatch, and SacredGrounds. International in scope, examples are included from LatinAmerica, Europe, the Pacific Rim, the United States, and Canada

Fire Sanctuary (The Chronicles of Nuala) Review

Fire Sanctuary (The Chronicles of Nuala)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have loved this book for a long time and I'm sorry to see that it is out of print. I actually stole (borrowed) my mother's copy so that I could read it for the umpteenth time. The characters are stong and compelling, the plot is deep and twisting, and the setting - oh wow! I was not surprised to find out that the author has an art degree! The world of Nuala is painted with words as rich as any pigments imaginable. From the moment we meet the outworlders journeying to Nuala for a "holiday" we are swept up in intrigue, mystery, romance, and danger. The entire book is rich in culture, religion and politics that are not of our world, and yet are familiar because they are so totally human. If you are a fan of sci-fi/fantasy and are looking for something that will suck you in, this is it. Offworld soldiers Moran and Lyte are visiting Nuala for a festival and so that Moran can see his betrothed, Ronuviel, a member of the ruling house of Atare. But the offworld federation has warned Lyte of possible danger, there is a plot afoot to topple the house of Atare, and the second in line for the throne is insane. When the front lines of the war with the Fewha shift, political survival takes a back seat to the saving of lives, and Nuala is changed forever. I highly recommend this book (as if that weren't clear already!) so start looking in those used bookstores!

Play it Again, SAHM (Steeple Hill Café) Review

Play it Again, SAHM (Steeple Hill Café)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's time to rejoin the SAHM email group and it looks like Rosalyn is back in charge but as a changed person! Instead of her former condescending self, a new women who is trying to be a better person is back. Joining her are the rest of the SAHM group including Dulcie, Zelia, Jocelyn, Paige, etc. New to the group are Iona and Hannah, both with personalities that take the group by surprise. This time the group faces issues such as grad school advisors that won't help, dealing with adoptive children who have emotional problems, being a working mom and having a stay at home husband and trying to find out what the perfect birthday party is. To top it off, the group decides they are going to meet for the first time at a get together. It's never a dull moment being a SAHM!
I was so excited when I heard there was going to be a third book in the series. This is probably my absolute favorite set of books to read. I read this book during the 24 Hour Readathon during the 3-5am hour. I knew that this was going to be toughest stretch of the Read-a-thon so I went with something I knew was going to keep me awake due to laughing. Did I make the best choice ever. I nearly died with laughter throughout this book. The women in here are so realistic. It's amazing how we can know their personalities just through their forum post, chats, emails and IMs. This book introduces two new characters to the mix: Hannah, a 19 year conservative mom and Iona, a creative poetry loving mom. They both add their unique personalities to the group. Iona, while initially coming off as a bit eccentric, finds that she fits easily into the group while Hannah, seems to keep putting up walls that drive the other women away from her.
Throughout the book, I found myself totally siding with the women and the decisions they made. There are plenty of serious issues discusses in the book but they are handled in a light hearted way and that email format is just so easy to read. There are no chapter breaks so it's incredibly hard to put the book down. As I said, this is one of the funniest series of books I have ever read. The scene where I just died laughing was the chatroom scene where someone forgets to private chat one of their messages. Just the way it was all handled, I had to literally put the book down, laugh for about 5 minutes before I could resume reading. It was like that throughout the book. This is one of the few series where I have found absolutely nothing wrong with the book.
I'm sad that with this book, the series comes to a close but everything is tied up very nicely. It's great to see how all of the characters have grown and changed since the first book. I really feel like I'm a part of their SAHM group and I would love to find a group of women like this next time. This series is one of my absolute favorites and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Whether you are a mom or not, chick lit fan or reader of emails, you will enjoy this book. VERY HIGHLY recommended.

Rather than taking the place of reading the novel, this supplement offers lots of help with putting its themes into focus. The character reviews are helpful, but the best part may be Angeline Godwin Dvorak's essay on how food functions in the novel as nurturing in Southern culture. The historical commentaries are also helpful.
