Michelin Green Guide Paris Review

I have purchased several guides to Paris prior to my trip. They all were quite good, but in the end this was the only one I took with me, and I was pleased with my decision. My hotels were reserved well ahead of time and I was aware of various practicalities, e.g., how to use Metro and RER, where to buy groceries, etc. What I needed was a guide to various sites and a set of walking tours with maps. And this Michelin guide was perfect for that. The quality of the binding, paper, print, and maps is very high making reading the guide more pleasurable than some other guides I have.
I would definitely use it on future trips to Paris, and will be buying updated editions depending on how soon that will be.

I am a huge fan of LP books and always try to get one before traveling abroad (3-4 trips per year). My wife and I were in Montreal for about 36 hours this June and this was fantastic. We saw pretty much the entire city in that time, thanks to Bixi Bikes. Simply the best way to see any city. Amazing. This LP, like all others, is in no way comprehensive, but we followed many of the recommendations and they were spot on. Note on us: We are 30 years old each, newly married, and love to travel and adventure.

We purchased the 2009 edition before embarking on the Camino Francais last May. We used the book every one of our 18 days hiking, followed the excellent maps, and relied on the detailed information about highlights and accommodations. We encountered nothing inaccurate, misleading, or out-of-date. This is simply the best English language guide to the Camino available. And it is vastly superior to the French language guide we used on our trek in 2008. We won't be hiking the Camino this year, but will be looking for Brierly's 2011 edition before embarking next year.

Writing Horses: The Fine Art of Getting It Right Review

Writing Horses: The Fine Art of Getting It Right

The e-book is a writer's guide to horses, covering everything from the basics of anatomy and riding to modern horse breeding and training to horse issues in historical or fantasy settings to the psychology of horses and people who deal with them. Informally written, extremely easy to read, and very, very useful. Probably too basic for anyone who already knows a lot about horses, but a great resource for the rest of us.

How far can a horse travel in a day? What does a horse eat? When is a brown horse really a sorrel (or a bay, or a dun)? What do tack and withers and canter mean? In this long-awaited and much-requested book based on her "Horseblog" at Book View Café, author and horse breeder Judith Tarr answers these questions and many more. She looks at horses from the perspective of the writer whose book or story needs them as anything from basic transport to major plot device, and provides definitions, explanations, and links and references for further research--leavened with insight into the world of the horse and the humans who both use and serve him. How fast can a horse run? What happens when a foal is born? How have humans and horses evolved together over the millennia? And above all, what mistakes do writers most often make when writing about horses, and how can the educated writer avoid them? Here is a guide to the fine art of getting it right.

Road Trip USA Pacific Coast Highway Review

Road Trip USA Pacific Coast Highway
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book does not include everything that you need to know about the PCH, but makes a pretty good attempt. It's the most up to date book on places to stay, eat, and attractions to visit along the highway including necessary phone numbers and websites. (very handy!) It has pictures of the major attractions, small but effective maps in each of the major cities and in each state, and local event information for certain towns and cities. The author also tells when the best times to visit for things such as:whale watching in Oregon or Monarch butterfly gatherings in California. Another nice feature is that it tells the reader of local legends, past-times, festivals, and customs that shows what makes each little (and big) town distinctive from one another. What's more is that it is just small enough to fit inside a purse or back pocket for when you are ready to make that awesome roadtrip. The only thing I can really say that is disappointing about it, is that it just doesn't seem long enough. I wish he would've added another 50-100 pages of stories and attractions. Do not use this book as your only reference.

Jerusalem, Israel, Petra & Sinai (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE) Review

Jerusalem, Israel, Petra and Sinai (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's tough to pick the "best" guidebook for a particular destination, and the proliferation of free travel information on the web makes choosing "the one" even tougher. My wife and I always start with a copy of an EyeWitness guide for the destination: there are pictures on every page, and we find the images help us plan our trip: the guides are particularly good for architecture and art. The practical guides in the back cover currency, hotels and restaurants.
This guide to Jerusalem is a particularly good example of the DK offerings: the images, paper, text, all are up to the high standards of other books in the series.
Having written that, there is really only one page that matters in deciding whether to buy: the newer the guide the better. This book appeared first in 2000 and was my companion to Israel. It was substantially revised in 2002, and revised again in 2007. If you like the Eyewitness series and have any interest in the destination, armchair or on the ground, your decision is made.
Note: DK maintains an excellent website at TravelDK , with updates on many of its guidebooks.

Shadows on the Sand: A Seaside Mystery (Seaside Mysteries) Review

Shadows on the Sand: A Seaside Mystery (Seaside Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sometimes a story can catch you by surprise in it's quality. A book from a genre not known for it's serious tone can really catch your attention. This is the best way to describe my surprise upon reading *Shadows on the Sand* by Gayle Roper.
The story starts with a young restaurant owner, Carrie Carter (whose sister co-owns the restaurant), teasing one of her waitresses, Andi, about her boyfriend fighting with one of Andi's co-workers named Jase. As more customers hear about the boyfriend, more dislike him, and we in the audience are meant not to like him either.
It turns out that Jase is found murdered, with his body dumped in a lake, and Andi is suddenly terrified. No matter what Carrie does, the teen will not tell her what is wrong. Carrie and her friend, Greg, a former police detective whom she is dating, must race against time to discover Andi and Jase's secrets, as well as deal with their own.
This seems like a traditional set-up for a suspense romance, so I probably have plenty of rolled-eyes at this quick synopsis. In many ways, that would be a correct and expected reaction. I found myself becoming quite aggrieved at the over-used staples of the genre.
What made a difference is that the plot was actually *believable*. The author did not shy away from tough subjects, or gruesome details. That is not to say, of course, that Roper went overboard in any graphic ways, but just to say that she did not pull her punches either, as it were.
Besides the typical murder plot for a suspense romance, the book dealt with important real-world themes and problems. Adultery, cults, runaways, dysfunctional families, the need to forgive others, and the difference between cults and the truth of the Bible.
Instead of covering the reader's eyes, the author put on full display the depravity and wickedness of mankind, and how people can hurt themselves and others to such a brutal extent. She also, however, showed the amazing love of God, and what people who are in His image (Image-Bearers as author Randy Alcorn puts it) can do with His help.
This is much-needed in the realm of Christian fiction. Too many Christians do not know how to respond when people say that "religion is responsible" for "x" bad thing in the world. They don't know how to argue that just as the truth is different from a lie, so belief in Christ is different from a cult, radical Islam, Catholic pedophiles, pastors who rape their counselees, and other horrors.
I don't want to give readers the false hopes that Gayle Roper gives a guide to combating these slanders and misperceptions. She does not. She *does* however, mention the evils of these false teachers, and present a vivid case for how they must be battled in the field of ideas so that we may, if God wills it, win souls for Christ.
The other issue is one of forgiveness. At first it seemed like the typical Christian book of how the character is bad for not forgiving, but then the novel went in a unique direction. I won't spoil it, but it did raise some interesting points, and ones that I have thought on.
All in all, a good mystery, and one of the few suspense romance for me to be above-average happy with.
Highly Recommended.

Frommer's Greece (Frommer's Complete Guides)

I found this book very useful. I used it mostly as a guide on a walking tour of Athens. I only had three days in Athens and wanted to see as much as possible. I spent a few hours browsing through the pertinent section and made my plan of action. Everything was as described. I also referred to it when making my hotel reservation and when looking for good restaurants. I stayed at the Hotel Philippos near the Acropolis - a great little place. Eating I went through great troubles one night to find the Taverna Sigalas in the Monasteraki area (because of subway construction,) but it was well worth the effort. I still drool at the thought of the wonderful Greek salad I had and the very best moussaka I've ever eaten. Going to Rome this year and I plan to buy a Frommer's for Rome because I only have three days there and I know I can depend on this book.

The Chesscafe Puzzle Book: Test and Improve Your Tactical Vision Review

The Chesscafe Puzzle Book: Test and Improve Your Tactical Vision
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a large collection of books of tactics and tactical problems, but I had avoided this one because the title misled me (and at least one other person I talked to) into believing it consisted of artificial studies, whereas I prefer my problems to be from real games. When I finally saw this book at the local chess club, I was pleasantly surprised to find the positions are from real games, labeled with the player's, dates, etc.
There are 565 problems in all, organized by motif (pin, fork, etc.), with some problems further labeled with hints like "White's position looks shaky. How to make it crumble?". Most of the problems are recent, from games in the 21st century, though there are a scattering of classics all the way back to Morphy. Almost all are from GM games, which of course means the difficulty is fairly uniformly high.
Because of the high quality of the diagrams and solutions, this book has replaced Reinfeld at my bedside for motif-based practice. I also recommend "Sharpen Your Tactics" which presents 1125 problems organized by difficulty, rather than motif. I believe the approaches of these two books, both high quality, complement each other in fully rounded regime of tactical study.

Combines clear discussions of tactical themes with over 600 well-chosen positions to test, challenge and teach. Although the classic combinations are not ignored, the emphasis here is on positions from modern tournament practice of the last decade. Tactics is a very important part of the game of chess and conscientious study and application of tactical principles is crucial to success. This book offers every type of tactical motif imaginable, from the more common back rank mates, pins, skewers, forks, up to and including some beautiful and rare combinations. This tactical book will prove exceptionally useful for a wide range of players, intermediate through master strength and beyond.

Hamburger America: One Man's Cross-Country Odyssey to Find the Best Burgers in the Nation Review

Hamburger America: One Man's Cross-Country Odyssey to Find the Best Burgers in the Nation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first saw Motz's documentary Hamburger America (which is included with the book) and was amazed on how he captured more than just places that serve a mean hamburger. Every place he went in the film gave you a look at different types of Americans, their history, their future and all held together by the love of America's favorite food. The book builds upon that. Each entry is written with admiration for the burger, the restaurant and the people that cook them. By visiting different cities, cultures, races, and histories of the many burger joints in this book, Motz is able to bring them altogether on one theme: they all make a great burger. And isn't that what America is about? This hodgepodge of cultures in one place looking for the dream, can all be united by ground beef in a bun. Forget the mass produced fast food chains. It's the local mom and pops, diners, decades old places that Americans hold true to their heart. It was written that if you don't claim your hometown greasy spoon as serving the best burger, then you're a wimp. Well this book covers many of those hometown favorites. Even if you do not especially like hamburgers, this book is essential for reading on American folk-life and its wonderful people.

Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook: Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond from New York's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant

See those pancakes on the cover? I made those! They turned out just as beautifully. A word of warning though, I would cut this recipe in half unless you have a football team lurking around. I used all of the batter and froze the remaining pancakes. One minute in the microwave and they tasted almost better than the fresh made ones. I have read about other cooks doing this with pancakes, but never tried it myself. I put them in zip lock bags with wax paper in between. Now whenever I want pancakes, I just put a couple in the microwave for about 45 seconds. My son is still talking about how good the maple butter was and it was quite simple to make. I also put aside some of that in the refrigerator for use later.
The recipes are all really good and I am working my way through the book. I found that they were quite easy to follow. All of the direction are clear and concise. The ingredients are easy to find, so no worries there like some other cookbooks. This is definitely a keeper for me.

Impressionism: Art, Leisure, and Parisian Society Review

Impressionism: Art, Leisure, and Parisian Society
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I taught college level painting and art history courses for ten years. This is one of the most memorable books I used as source material. Usually a treatment of Impressionism will write of it as a movement in response to the paintings of the Academy; an inquiry into the play of light and instantaneity. Fine, fine, but how many books do we really need that say the same thing ? This book looks at changes in the architecture of Paris which changed the city from a network of villages into a web of wide boulevards and massive, sometimes monotonous buildings. People (many of them young) were moving into the city and feeling the displacement and dehumanization which we usually associate with depictions of Victorian era London.
Herbert spends a good bit of time looking at the clothing of individuals portrayed in paintings to ruminate about their social standing. His keen eye for gesture picks up a lot. Looking at an outdoor cafe scene by Manet, he notices that the young man at the table with a woman is actually kneeling next to her, not seated there. From this he infers that the man is trying to pick up the jeune fille. The rather prudish look on her face seems to confirm that this is what's happening.
The copious illustrations are wonderful. Many are of paintings which are infrequently reproduced in art books. There are also a lot of works by Gustave Caillebotte whose compositions are so fascinating. The writing is lively. I think this is a terrific book for a lover of Impressionism and/or a lover of Paris. It's a wonderful fusion of images and prose. I'm just so glad to find it available at such a reasonable price.
