"Hamburger America," is the greatest book ever written about the greatest food item ever, written by the greatest Burger lover ever, George Motz. The book has now been "Completely Revised and Updated," just as the title states.
The original edition of the book featured 100 stories, reviews and photos of some of the most important Burgers that make this great country as great as it is. It is a veritable bible of quality Hamburgers that can be used as a historically based road map for those of us on a Glorious Pursuit of Delicious Burgers.
I met George in October of 2009 as he invited me out to have a Burger at Schnipper's Quality Kitchen in NYC, which later was added to my list of The Best Burgers in NYC on burgerconquest.com. George is always smiling, always laughing. always excited to eat and or talk about Burgers and is the man behind The NYC Food Film Festival. It's a week long event based around George's passion for film and food. It's a fantastic series of events and when they announce the line up for 2011, you best jump to get tickets.
George is the Indiana Jones of Hamburgers and this book is his way of keeping the ark from becoming lost. No Hamburger lover should be without.

Chicago's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the Windy City Review

Chicago's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the Windy City
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On one hand, this book truly shines in uncovering hidden gems throughout the city that more mainstream bar guides completely disregard. Mr. Stockton helps provide a means to access areas and aspects of the city that are nearly impossible to find information on. For that, I commend him. Taverns are a dying breed in this city, especially ones that don't serve food or cater to some niche, and in some respects, Mr. Stockton's book will contribute to ensuring their survival.
I have been to the majority of bars that are mentioned in the book and some of his reviews are excellent. However, I should warn that especially regarding the South Side, his lack of neighborhood understanding is more than apparent. He seemed to choose his bars at whim from the midst of many solid candidates--based on sheer anecdote rather than character. This sort of approach also applied to his treatment of the Southwest and the Far North, which I think he tried to portray as much more stereotypically Polish than they are. However, he really excelled in finding great forgotten bars on the North Side and downtown.
He is undoubtably a good writer, and has a comedic touch that sent me laughing more than once. However, a lot of times he resorted to a narrative style of writing that seemed to poke fun at the customers and I worry that other people might be influenced by his cynical voyeuristic tone, and then try to go to those bars to "have an adventure". That slightly condescending attitude would destroy the fabric of the bars that he purportedly glorifies.
Overall, despite a few quality reviews and readability (his transportation pointers and pictures are extremely helpful), the tone of the book ends up being more than a little insulting and the scope of the material falters.
(I also wonder how he manages to get into so many odd skirmishes as I have never had a problem in such areas, and have never witnessed a bar fight in Chicago.)

Eating Las Vegas: The 50 Essential Restaurants Review

Eating Las Vegas: The 50 Essential Restaurants
Average Reviews:

Consider this a restaurant review guide with a three edged sword. I loved the way Curtas, Jacobson and Mancini made significant comments on each entry with wit and humor. Ten times the guide Michelin is. I wish the Vetoes section would have been longer and it would have been nice for the steakhouses in Vegas to have their own section (with extensive comments). This is a must for the semi-frequent business traveler who needs to impress. Job well done.

Restaurant guides typically give readers a singular viewpoint. Eating Las Vegas triples the ante, offering reviews from three local food critics who hail from completely different generations, backgrounds, lifestyles and tastes--and who usually disagree on the merits of any particular restaurant. After countless arguments over lunch, Las Vegas' best-known dining writers accomplished the impossible and came up with a list of the eateries all three could happily recommend. In Eating Las Vegas, John Curtas, Max Jacobson, and Al Mancini spotlight the 50 restaurants they could all agree are essential stops for foodies, visitors, and locals seeking an unforgettable meal in the city that boasts more than 2,000 places for eating out. With reviews ranging from some of the Strip's most lavish dining rooms to hole-in-the-wall ethnic gems, this groundbreaking food guide propels readers to the dizzy heights of culinary nirvana. And once you've made your way through all 50, you can truly say you've "eaten Las Vegas." As added bonuses, Eating Las Vegas features lists of the best restaurants in a dozen categories and a special veto section, including some of the restaurants prized by one critic and rejected by the others, over which the authors engaged in their most heated disagreements.

As a Rome-based food and travel writer I am one of the harshest critics when it comes to guide books about Italy in general, and Rome in particular. So it is with great pleasure that I can heartily recommend Food Wine Rome to anyone looking for a guide book to great food in Rome. David Downie has managed to include the city's hidden secrets as well as reveal new details about it's much loved culinary history. This is the book to buy to discover out-of-the-way cookie factories, pasta stores and hole-in-the-wall trattorie. It makes a great gift for anyone traveling to Rome, or for those who just want to know more about Roman food.

Take Out from the Writers Café Review

Take Out from the Writers Café
Average Reviews:

"Take out from the Writer's Café" is a collection of whimsical, magical, historic and poignant poems. The pages are filled with characters of fantasy and legend, the ancient and the contemporary, blended artistically with childhood reminiscings and deeply personal revelations. Rose's poetry transcends the mere paper upon which it is printed into fantastic conjurings laid out for the imagination to savor.
My three favorite pieces are, `Ode to a Crow,' `The Flying Dutchman,' and `Defiant.' Maintaining a Peter Pan persona with a dash of humor, Rose's witty poems are imbued with a sense of wonder, eternal youth and faith, juxtaposed against an underlying sense of loneliness. An enduring love for the liberation offered by the pen and paper allows her to succinctly transform her timeless fantasies into classic literature time after time. "Take out from the Writer's Café" presents readers with a diverse menu selection. A sumptuously enjoyable read and a marvelous adventure! Order up!

Deliciosas Frutas Tropicales (Cultura del Cafe) Review

Deliciosas Frutas Tropicales (Cultura del Cafe)
Average Reviews:

This is one of the most beautiful and most valuable books I have ever seen. Each single photograph is a masterpiece of art. The structure of each chapter is splendid. It starts with a still life image of the fruit group to be described, the environment where they grow, a detailed description including nutrition facts. What follows are gourmet compositions and ideas with recipes, easy to follow. If you are not salivating while just looking at the book, something has to be wrong with your imagination or your taste buds. Thank you, Liliana Villegas (Author) and Jorge Eduardo Arango (Photographer) for creating this wonderful masterpiece of practical art.

With a quiet intensity, the finely-wrought poems in Barbara McGrath*s lyrical Seawind Caf* often rely on the backdrop of an unsettled ocean to explore relationships and to question the nature of what*s retrievable through memory. Just as *morning light moves cautiously* in the stunning poem *Beginning,* the author guardedly revisits the past in an unrelenting search for solace.

Heaven's Fury on Hell's Cafe Review

As an author (Blue Street) I have great expectations for a first time novelist and Erika Michelle hasn't let me down. With pure talent, she found the right brush by which to paint her story. She has a unique gift for believable and street-wise dialog with plenty of imagery and real situations. I enjoyed the story and found myself easily drawn into the plot. Even when I had other demands on my time, I couldn't wait to get on to the next chapter and finish. I urge everyone to read this book!

It is Sam and Joey's first trip to the Big Apple and its underground party circuit. Their first stop is a bar called Hell?s Café. All hell breaks loose. Danger lurks in every corner. Death and destruction are unfolding at their feet. They had heard of things like "End Days", "The Return of Christ," and "Mark of the Beast" at Sunday school as children. Never in their wildest dreams did they think it would actually happen. Will their world as they knew it ever be the same again?

Café Dulcet Review

Café Dulcet

Café Dulcet
by Chiquis Barrón
Reviewed by Carolyn Davis
"Coffee and people are similar in many ways. Both are influenced by several factors.... While some start to burn or char, others just begin to manifest their wonderfully unique and complex flavors." Coffee is the bonding substance and metaphor throughout this bracing tale of Ximena Ferrer, called Nena, and the people and events of her life. The author's Web page states, "Café Dulcet is an engaging and insightful story that delves into the fundamental aspects of life which shape people's existence and ultimately give them their flavor and purpose."
The town of Nogales at the border between Arizona and Mexico provides the setting. Throughout Nena's adventures, processes of coffee development and preparation are used in comparison to those that humans undergo. Examples include, the quality of a bean, the intensity and duration of the roasting process, and how much either a human or a coffee bean can and should stand to become as developed and flavorful as possible. All of this contributes to the characters' as well as the reader's savoring of experiences and appreciating the dulcet of the café.
Delicious metaphors abound as the reader drinks in the story and the memorable people. Among them, the café owner and philosopher Doña Pilar, the already "charred" girl, Ramona, a politician, friend, and lover of Nena's named Alex, Nena's longtime friend, Sasha. These and many others are the human "beans" of the story. Their stories unfurl amid numerous lessons in the types, maturation levels, and the proper as well as the improper treatment of a variety of beans. All of the coffee references might become tiresome, but in Barrón's hands the story is sumptuous.
