I found this book upon moving into a Providence apartment in 1990, started cooking, and people have been asking me for the recipes ever since.
This vegetarian, whole food cookbook is a must-have in every kitchen, including those of hardcore carnivores like myself.
Almost all of the recipes will work for the novice cook, and the result will please the most refined palates. There are too many great recipes to mention, but here are some that you must try:
1. Spinach lasagne with eggplant: The textures here wow the most varicious meat-lovers, who never seem to realize it is a non-meat recipe. Add to this Julie's efficient prep methods, and you have an all-time classic.
2. Quiche: This is an outstanding cook-ahead meal for any gathering, and Julie gives you the most tantalizing varieties: Brocolli/Bleu Cheese, Blushing Tomato (w/ capers and Rosemary), Potato Sour Cream. They are all outstanding.
3. Chickpeas: There are two recipes in here that do amazing things with the humble garbanzo. Serve these spicy dishes over rice, and accept the compliments of admiring diners.

Valentine's Cafe Review

Valentine's Cafe

Probably the best book about love I've read - Though I can't think of a story that didn't touch on the subject in some way, this one hits with a wonderfully quirky sense of humor (irreverent, well-timed and a nice mix of subtle v. bust-a-gut laughs...) and humanity. If only there really was a Valentine's Café.....

The higher powers send the God of Love, Victor Valentine, to a frozen northern wasteland. His mission: spread the love.Valentine's strategy is to open a restaurant. The food and wine, the potions at Valentine's disposal, the music, the waiters - all of it is directed at inspiring libidinous feeling among the clientele. Valentine's partner in scheming is his chef, the towering and volcanic beauty, Elevana Natasha Demidova. Nats. Together they succeed too well in turning the cafe into a wildly popular destination.Inevitably, Valentine and the former Russian Mafia moll launch a tempestuous relationship of their own. Betrayal isn't far behind. By then, love trouble is just one of Valentine's problems. The minister across the street is eyeing Valentine's Cafe as a site for his mega-church. Picketers are on the sidewalk, the city councilman is aligned against him, and even the Governor has reason to help bring Valentine down. The conclusion is a showdown between Valentine, Nats and her mobster pals, the councilman, the governor and half the neighborhood, all within the richly appointed confines of Valentine's Cafe. In this novel, if not in life itself, everyone gets approximately what they deserve.

At the Sea Floor Cafe: Odd Ocean Critter Poems Review

At the Sea Floor Cafe: Odd Ocean Critter Poems
Average Reviews:

Bulion, Leslie. 2011. At the Sea Floor Café Odd Ocean Critter Poems. Atlanta: Peachtree. ISBN: 978-1-56145-5652.
The ocean and its creatures have always been a fascination for humans. Explorers have only investigated about give percent of the oceans, and man's curiosity begs for more information. This compilation of poems by Leslie Bulion takes a look at the odd creatures that live under the sea. The eighteen poems explore fish, octopus, squid and other animals, focusing on the obscure and the different like the sea spiders and the coconut octopus. Next to each poem, there is a paragraph or two giving interesting information about the creature in the poem. Some of the paragraphs include the pronunciation of the more scientific words, which is helpful. The glossary in the back also helps readers understand words they may not have read before. The illustrations support the theme of ocean life, but they do little to reinforce the idea of the odd creatures. The typical drawings do support the idea of the critters described as being different or unique.
What makes this book special is its eclectic style. Each poem is told in a different way: a triolet (eight-lined poem with just two rhyming sounds), free verse, lyrics, and a cinquain. The different rhythms and designs give the reader a broad range of poetry in which to read and, in the case of beginner writers, to imitate. In the back of the book, each poem's style is explained, which gives a young writer an idea of how to write a similar poem.
One of the poems that embodies the idea of the book (odd critters) with diverse poetry is "Dolphin Fashion," a limerick.
A bottlenose counseled her daughter:
"Put this sponge on your beak underwater.
You can scare out more fish,
Poke sharp stones as you wish,
And your skin'll stay smooth like it oughter" (Bulion 19).
The additional paragraph explains how some dolphins near Australia have sponges on their noses. Researchers believe one mother started using the sponge to protect her nose while feeding on the ocean floor. Her babies imitated her, and a tradition began. The unique behavior of these dolphins is told lightheartedly in this limerick while exposing children to a new format for a poem.
To demonstrate how poetry can be fun, a teacher or librarian can use the poem "Upside Down and All-Around," which is about a snail. The words curve around in a circle, creating the image of a snail. After reading the poem and discussing how the set-up adds to the feel of the poem, students can pair up to write a poem about a favorite animal, twisting the words into the shape of the animal. Students who may not enjoy poetry may like putting the words into a shape, thus engaging them in poetry.
I reviewed this book for my poetry class at Texas Woman's University.

The Silver Cloud Cafe Review

Vea's book looks at the issue of immigration from an unusual viewpoint, using mysticism, religion, and simple slight of hand magic to tell a story that incorporates not only the struggles that immigrants to the U.S. endure, but also the daily events that permeate the lives of all people. The story is centered around an evening of inexplicable occurrences, ranging from a mysterious murder to several fires started in the surrounding area, and expands to tell the story of several immigrants, whose unique experiences led them all to San Francisco in the "present." I thought that the use of mystery and the issues of faith and magic were extremely interesting, but what I found even more intriguing were the stories and experiences Vea's characters related through various methods. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and appreciated the opportunity to enter into a world that I have little experience with.

Sometimes writers read a book and wonder "hey, why didn't I think of that?" The idea is so good, the research looks like so much fun, and reading the finished product is just effortless. Just a few pages into Texas Old-Time Restaurants and Cafes and we were getting those familiar thoughts--what a great idea! Texas author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers has come up with a real winner here that will appeal to readers whether you're living in Texas, planning a trip to the Lone Star State, or just traveling from the comfort of your favorite armchair. Divided geographically, this guide takes a look at restaurants and cafes that been serving Texas for 20 years or longer. You'll find all types of restaurants here, from ones near major tourist areas like San Antonio's Casa Rio, located right on the beautiful River Walk, to small, out of the way places like Tomball's Goodson's Cafe and Waskom's New Waskom Cafe, which isn't new at all but dates back to 1928. Each of the restaurant entries includes a history of the cafe along with directions and nearby attractions. Many of the cafe listings also include recipes for Texas favorites ranging from chicken fried steak to pecan pie.

I loaded this book on my Kindle before a trip to the beach. Being raised in a small town in NC, I loved reading about the host of characters, and found them familiar while still refreshingly new. I devoured this book, and wanted it to never end! I highly recommend this book to any one looking for a comfortable, but not too predictable read. Perfect for the beach, a relaxing weekend, or anytime. I look forward to more works from Dawn.

Oh, Baby (The Whitney Chronicles Series #3) (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #24) (Steeple Hill Cafe) Review

Oh, Baby (The Whitney Chronicles Series #3) (Life, Faith and Getting It Right #24) (Steeple Hill Cafe)
Average Reviews:

Judy Baer's latest Steeple Hill Cafe story frequently refers to Proverbs 13:12 "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true it brings life and joy."
The plot and subplots carry out the theme of "hope deferred." Molly, the heroine, dreams of seeing a doula (professional birthing coach) center at Bradshaw Hospital. Dr. Clay Reynolds, an influential obstetrician there does not respect her profession and in fact, feels it is dangerous to have too many nonmedical people in the delivery room. Molly's brother and best friend Lissy have been "unlucky in love" and are tired of waiting to find the right person. Tony, another friend is worried about his sister, who is depressed because she and her husband are having infertility issues. Even the hero's young son, Noah, keeps being told 'no' every time he asks for a dog.
By the end of the book, hope has been deferred long enough and everyone's dreams come true, including Noah's, although not necessarily in the way the dreamers would have foreseen. Molly learns to trust God's timing rather than her own.
As usual, Judy Baer gives us a colorful, well developed cast of characters, both human and animal. Molly's family is delightfully offbeat and Geranium the diva pig was very funny. My favorite character was Dr. Clay Reynolds, who as a doctor is strong, commanding and totally focused on caring for his patients. But when Molly gets to know him outside of work, she discovers another side of him. Clay is also still grieving the double loss of his wife and his faith and overcome with loneliness. He even refers to it as his 'default emotion.' While he opposes her profession, he can't help but be drawn to Molly, who is filled with life and surrounded by friends and family. Whenever they meet outside of work their relationship takes a step forward. Unfortunately, at work it takes two steps back.
This is a great book if you like a story that makes you laugh and yet leaves you with a little bit to think about.

From the moment we met, obstetrician Clay Reynolds scorned my profession as a birthing coach. His scathing remarks left me crying on the shoulder of my potbellied pig, Gertie! It seems only the handsome doc's eight-year-old son, who thinks I hung the moon, can make Clay be civil to me.Clay is a great doctor and loving father. And we're finding a lot in common as we volunteer together at a free clinic. But he's still frowning at me in the delivery room.So how can I convince him God gave me skills that complement his own? Maybe with a little help from above I can change Clay's attitude toward doulas in general… and me in particular.

Lone Star Cafe (Texas Hill Country, Book 2) Review

Lone Star Cafe (Texas Hill Country, Book 2)
Average Reviews:

This is the first time I've ever read Ms. Wingate and I found her story to be not only entertaining but sweet. Ms. Wingate's latest is the second in her "Texas Hill Country" series and since I've not read the first in the series I was pleased to find that this was a strong stand alone read, and that I missed nothing (except perhaps for a good read with the first of the books)and highly enjoyed myself during the process of reading this story.
Laura Draper is a magazine editor on temporary duty in Texas. She is on her way to a photo shoot that promises to make the first edition of "Texcetra" a smash hit. Well, you can't always plan for everything and in the space of less then thirty minutes a hail storm, tornado threat, and Laura's personal relationship crashes down on her (over a cell phone call thank you very much) and make what should have been a red letter day, a red eye day from crying. She closes her eyes for just a minute in what looks to be an abandoned parking lot in "crossroads". She has no idea that this stop will change her life...for the better. Here she meets two zany elderly twins and one strong but sweet man (our hero Graham Keeton) and finds herself laughing more then she had in a very long while.
This story was great and I loved how it brought "small town life" to life! This book made me laugh (the bat scene is great) and cry which, in my opinion is always a sign of a good book. The romance between Laura and Graham is wonderful. The chemistry is not steaming by any means but I think that's what makes it so much better and special. Laura grows personally during the course of this read, and the secondary characters, such as her father, her zany assistant Kristi, and her other friends all make this a worth while read. I highly recommend Ms. Wingate's "Lone Star Cafe" for a wonderful way to spend an evening.

Lucy Diamond creates wonderful characters and story lines that a reader wants to keep reading. The Beach Cafe stayed right in line with that. There was so much to like in this novel, I'd rapidly recommend it to a friend. From the main character right down to the supporting characters, all were interesting and by the end, I was ready to start searching for my very own Beach Cafe.

Million Dollar Dilemma (Love, Faith & Getting It Right #7) (Steeple Hill Cafe) Review

Million Dollar Dilemma (Love, Faith and Getting It Right #7) (Steeple Hill Cafe)
Average Reviews:

Like most co-workers do when a collection is taken up for a baby shower, wedding, promotion or perhaps a birthday, Cassia Carr kicks in her obligatory five dollars and then goes back to what she was doing. But one collection Cassia donates to is different -- and she doesn't realize it. She's not contributing to just any cause; she's contributing to the lottery. And she and her colleagues win. Her portion of the windfall comes to just over $20 million. Not a bad day's work, you think?
Problem is Cassia is a P.K. (preacher's kid) who speaks in scripture verses and doesn't believe in gambling. She is horrified to think that she has $20 million in ill-gotten gains -- so she decides to give it away. The problem is, it's more difficult than one would think to give large amounts of lottery gains away.
But wait! One man (in a trio of would-be suitors) is more than willing to relieve Cassia of those disgusting greenbacks. Adam, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has recently returned from a ravaged land and that fact, and Cassia, is preventing him from getting on with his life. He's interested in Cassia but doesn't want her to know that he's also interested in her money and the story of her money.
Adam has fallen away from his faith and just might find his way back if he opens his heart and listens to it and God.
For fans of the Whitney Chronicles there is a couple of interesting cameo appearances in Million Dollar Dilemma.
I so enjoy Judy Baer's 'chick-lit' Christian fiction. It's a fun romp through life that provides each of us with thought-provoking situations. I giggled my way through The Whitney Chronicles. In this book I started laughing on page 24 and didn't ever quit.
Armchair Interviews says: Million Dollar Dilemma is a million-dollar treasure you must read! And give a wonderful gift to a friend.

I loved this book! It was a great read for a rainy week-end snuggled on my couch with, dare I say, a cup of tea. It was a fantastic journey that I didn't want to end...maybe one we all want to take...to look inside ourselves and redo or undo some of our own past...or maybe just to see why we do the things we do...or maybe just to enjoy a few hours with a music legend.

John Winston Lennon was shot outside the Dakota Building on December 8, 1980. In November of 2006, he finds himself standing in Grand Central Station, unaware that he was assassinated. Is he a ghost? Perhaps not. On her way home from work, ad exec Amy Parisi sees the former Beatle sitting alone in the Mercy Street Café in Greenwich Village. There's only one problem: there's no Mercy Street in the Village, and Amy is the only one who can see the café.In the weeks that follow, Amy and Lennon take one of the most incredible road trips in rock and roll history, one far stranger than any acid-induced hallucination from the sixties.
John Lennon and the Mercy Street Café is the story of a man, the voice of an entire generation, who must face the inner demons that plagued both his childhood and his years as the most recognizable figure in popular music. As he does so, he is given the opportunity to leave his indelible mark on the world one last time, showing how hope and the power of music can indeed give peace to a chaotic world.
If you are one of the millions who has been captivated by a man who was both clown and political activist, then step into the Mercy Street Café and meet the legend from Liverpool. But pack your bags for a magical mystery tour that leaves the rational, Newtonian world behind. You are about to enter the world of John Lennon.

A Place Called the Bla-Bla Cafe Review

A Place Called the Bla-Bla Cafe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Upon opening the front cover of this book, I was sent back in time. I sat at a corner table watching some of the greatest entertainers of our time perform on stage. The music heard however, did not only come from the stage but also from within the audience where some of the most talented singers and musicians I would ever have the privilege of hearing, joined in song.
And such is the setting for the story, of "A Place Called The Bla-Bla Café."
When reading a non-fiction book the author has to be able to paint a picture that allows the reader to feel as if they were there, witnessing the event, a part of history. Sandy Ross does that and more with her first-hand account of her time spent performing at the Bla-Bla Café in Los Angeles, CA. In addition to her own, Ms. Ross shares the stories of the other performers through photos and interviews creating a lively image in the mind of her readers.
It was not until reading this book that I longed to get on stage in a small café, strum a guitar and sing to a packed room. This book brings out the musician in us all and tells the story of true art, friendship and above all, family. Whether you are a musician, a historian or simply a reader longing for a book to leave you feeling uplifted and inspired, take a walk down Ventura Boulevard and stop at number 11059 and join in the story of "A Place Called The Bla-Bla Café"

A Place Called the Bla-Bla Café, chronicles the history of the Bla-Bla Café, an early, well-loved and well-respected entertainment industry showcase that pioneered much of what we now know as entertainment showcasing today. Although mostly written by Sandy Ross, one of the Bla-Bla Café's original regular performers and its entertainment coordinator for 8 years, it also contains chapters of stories, interviews, anecdotes, and perspectives contributed by 15 other regular café performers, family, and staff, including: jazz singers Jelsa Palao and Al Jarreau, country singer-songwriter and Capital Records recording artist, Maxine Sellers, Fred Bliffert (of the '70s Electra/Asylum recording group, Jelly), hit country songwriter Gene Nelson, and pop artists Lisa Nemzo, and Lauren Wood and Novi Novog (of the '70s Warner Bros. recording group, Chunky, Novi and Ernie). Also included is a staff table and a 90-page performers' table that lists hundreds of performers who showcased there along with a synopsis of their industry credits: Jimmy Webb, Karla Bonoff, Peter Allen, Keb' Mo', Roseanne Cash, Patti Davis, Keith Green, David Blue, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, William Katt, Amy Madigan, Liz Torres, Vonda Shepard, The Motels, Huey Lewis and the News, The Police, Sylvester, Michael Greer, Vicki Randle, Shelby Flint, Carl Anderson, Rosie Flores, Steve Gillette, Peter Alsop, Steve Seskin, Randy Sharp, Jenny Yates, Don Ellis, Morgana King, Joe Pass. . . and the list goes on and on. Most of all, though, the book provides a portal in which to view the spirit of the performing artists of the 1970s, through their naivety, discovery and growth, at a time of stark contradictions and prejudices, political disheartenments, global violence, and sexual/social revolution. It's a must-read for people who were there and everyone who appreciates the value of living their dreams.
