China's Book of Martyrs (Fire and Blood) (Fire and Blood) Review

China's Book of Martyrs (Fire and Blood) (Fire and Blood)

Why house churches are blossoming in China
One reason why there are now 100,000,000 Christians in China, is that the blood of Chinese martyrs has been the seed of Christian growth. Since the first recorded martyrdoms in AD 845, about 250,000 Christians in China have been killed for their faith.
From 1900, more Christians have been martyred in China than in all other places combined.
"China's Book of Martyrs" by Paul Hattaway records the heroic stories of thousands of these martyrs, locals and foreigners, from all Christian denominations.
Martyrs like Eleanor Chestnut from the USA who served as a medical missionary in Guangdong Province from 1893.
In order to build a clinic, Chestnut used most of her salary, and for years lived on very little food. When her hospital was attacked by rioters on October 28, 1905, she could have escaped, but chose to stay, her final act of service to the Chinese people being to rip a piece of material from her own dress to bandage the head of a child wounded by the rioters.
Martyrs like Bishop Ferdinand Hamer from the Netherlands who served in China from 1865 until his death at the time of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. He, too, could have escaped, but chose to stay with his flock, and suffered an atrocious death. His fingers, toes, nose and ears were cut off, then he was covered with cotton cloth soaked with oil before being hooked feet first to the top of a tripod and set on fire.
In earlier days, some missionaries felt that the faith of local Chinese Christians may not have been very deep. But the opposite was true and more than 200,000 of them courageously laid down their lives for the sake of the Gospel.
"China's Book of Martyrs" is not something to be read at one sitting. A few of its 600 pages is all one can take in one reading. It is so overpowering. But it's truly a daily dose of courage.
Like many other outstanding books about China from Paul Hattaway, "China's Book of Martyrs" can be obtained from www.asiaharvest.org

I've lived in Atlanta for years now, and a little over a year ago I realized I hadn't seen much of the state beyond my city. I bought this book last spring, and I absolutely love it. If you're looking for the everyday tourist attraction that everyone flocks to, this book covers that (but only in a passing comment or 2). But most importantly this book covers, in great detail, fantastic places many Georgians and tourists overlook. The condition my copy of this book is in should tell you how much I love it and have used it. Not only does it list attractions, but it also covers festivals and other events specific to cities of all sizes in Georgia. I prefer off-the-beaten-path types of travel, and this book has made me appreciate and love all of the history, kookiness, and personality that my state has to offer.

Really extensive information. Light on the photos but strong on content. Very up-to-date, much more so than most of the bigger name guide books. Maps were extremely useful while traveling around Quito and the restaurant reviews helped a lot. It's also really cool because you can visit their web site and add your own content on stuff, like if something changes or you had a bad hotel or whatever.
Highly recommended.

When Your Children Hurt Review

When Your Children Hurt

I am a fan of Charles Stanley and have read several of his books. This one is good, maybe a little repetitive if you've read others by Stanley. The chapter on fear is awesome, and makes getting the book worthwhile. If you have experienced the death or serious illness of a child this may be a hard read. It holds that all pain is for a reason- a hard concept when your child is the one in pain or gone. I got it to help me deal with future trials my child faces. If you want it for that reason, I'd say it's great.

There are no easy answers to life's problems. This is especially true when a loved one is hurting. In When Your Children Hurt, Dr. Charles Stanley addresses many of the issues families face when a child is fighting a long-term illness, the effects of abuse, or other issues such as drugs or immorality. It's during those times when feelings of hopelessness can quickly become despair. Dr. Stanley reminds us, "God has an answer for our deepest need, but we must seek His help."How do you deal with the heartache of watching your child face painful situations? There is only one way: through faith in Jesus Christ. You can spend a lifetime trying to fix a situation that only He can mend. Or you can trust Him and watch Him work mightily to bring hope to your most hopeless situation.

The Rough Guide to Copenhagen 4 (Rough Guide Copehagen) Review

The Rough Guide to Copenhagen 4 (Rough Guide Copehagen)
Average Reviews:

I really liked this guide for reading ahead before I went to Copenhagen. Of the three books I got, this was the best for this purpose. (The other two were Frommer's Copenhagen Day by Day, and Lonely Planet Copenhagen Encounter.)
As is typical of Rough Guides, the pictures here are nothing special, nor are the maps. The printing is generally two color -- black and orange on white non-glossy paper -- but there are some glossy color pages and a few nice pictures included.
Among the things I like about the Rough Guides are all the background information, and I'm glad I bought this book for that. I brought it to Copenhagen with me, but seldom referred to it for our quick trip. Instead, I liked the Frommer's for that (which had its information organized in little tidbits). I didn't much like the little Lonely Planet book I bought and left that at home.
Copenhagen is a fairly small city and fairly walkable, though it was raining quite a bit when I was there. Note that although the books contain subway maps with six lines, only the M1 and M2 (green and yellow on most maps I've seen) are operational as of August 2010... the others are planned. I think I read somewhere that they are not due to be completed until 2018.

There's nothing like a guidebook that's beautifully written and a pleasure to read. I expect to find lots of info in any guidebook I pick up, but it's a real bonus to find, as I did here, lots of insider tips and details about the kinds of things a first-time visitor would want to know. I picked up this book because it was the newest available - - a good choice, because it helped me plan my days. I just got back from two weeks in the Netherlands on my own, one week of which I spent in Amsterdam. I carried this book with me as I went and consulted it a lot. It helped me decide which coffeeshops to visit, pointing me away from high-neon blaring tourist traps to fun little places like Rusland and the Grey Area. It helped me find restaurants. I liked the neighborhood-by-neighborhood maps. And I loved the glossary of Dutch food terms! The history of Amsterdam in this book felt vibrant and alive, unlike the bowdlerized version given in the Lonely Planet guide. (Compare the descriptions of the Lieverdje and the Provos to see what the LP guide leaves out.) Good guidebook. Thumbs up!

Visiting Small-Town Florida Review

Visiting Small-Town Florida
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book depicts a side of Florida rarely seen. Although in the last 50 years or so Florida has experienced unparalled growth at the hands greedy developers and susceptible politicians, this book proves that some of what makes Florida great still exists. Small towns such as Arcadia, Cedar Key, and LaBelle are mirrors into Florida's past, preserving the diverse history of our state while retaining their small-town character. One of things that surprised me the most about this book is the fact that there are still some small towns on the Florida coast. Towns like Boca Grande and St. George Island prove that a sustainable coastal community can be retained without high-rise condos and tacky tourist shops. Nonetheless, most of the towns depicted here are in the interior of the state, which for the most part has retained its small town character (with the exception of Orlando, a true eye-sore smack dab in the middle of the state). Tourists should buy this book to appreciate the true Southern flavor of a state taken over by Yankees. I should know--I'm a fifth-generation Florida cracker!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coffee and Tea Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coffee and Tea
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've ever wanted to know everything there is to know about coffee and tea, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coffee & Tea is certainly a good resource. From growing locations to harvesting methods, processing to transport, home-roasting to blending, and even the best way to pull a shot of espresso, Travis Arndorfer and Kristine Hansen explore the world of these gourmet beverages from start to finish.
For sheer volume and completeness of information this book is a winner; I learned an incredible amount of wonderful history and useful information from it. For liveliness of writing--an important consideration in the long-running "Complete Idiot's Guides" line, which strives to make often-complex subjects accessible to the general public--it does a solid job, although it's hard to go step-by-step through the complexities of pulling espresso, properly tamping grounds, and cleaning an espresso machine without things getting a tad boring.
I have only one major reservation regarding this book, and it was enough to bring my rating down a bit. The authors manage to convey the impression through all of their detailed information that unless you're buying incredibly fresh beans, grinding them with an expensive grinder, brewing them with an expensive brewer, and preferably roasting green beans yourself in small batches with your own roaster, then you're simply not drinking good coffee. I honestly couldn't look through their recommendations and find a middle ground that I'd consider affordable that they'd consider drinking good coffee.
Given the typical market of the CIG books, this seems incongruous. It's one thing to tell you how to spend incrementally more depending on your budget and time available to get the most out of your coffee experience, but this book makes it seem like no one except wealthy, semi-retired folks or professionals who do this for a living can make "good" coffee. That's a shame, because I think it's likely to make a good handful of readers throw up their hands and say "well, if I can't do it right, why bother to go beyond my normal cheap cup and explore any of this at all?"
If you have an interest in the details of coffee and tea I do recommend that you pick up this book. Just make sure you're willing to be a little stubborn in putting aside the authors' overly-restrictive definitions of good coffee, and go with what you feel up to.

Grace: Gods Unmerited Favor Review

Grace: Gods Unmerited Favor
Average Reviews:

It is often said that Augustine of Hippo was the "theologian of grace." Charles Spurgeon was the theologian of grace par excellence, not to mention one of the finest evangelical preachers this side of the Apostle Paul. The message of God's grace in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is *the* distinctive teaching that distances vital, virile Christianity from all other forms of religion which are essentially predicated upon the notion that man must *earn* the favor of God or the gods. No one but Charles Spurgeon has been able to so ably unpack the *doctrine of grace* from the Pauline epistles. All of grace - salvation, becoming right with God, being *rescued* from sin and eternal destruction, becoming a son or daughter of God, being translated from being enemies of God to becoming friends of God adopted into His Kingdom . . . it is *all of grace*! If this is the hunger of your never-dying soul - then feast on Spurgeon. CHS masterfully unpacks the text: "Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, *not according to our works* - but according to His own purpose" - this is good news for those who have spent half a life-time engaged in works-righteousness endeavors in order to find peace of soul, rest for their souls. Spurgeon is the master! Read his works and fight the good fight to find true rest in Jesus Christ who is the Lord our Righteousness, the Lord our Holiness - all of His unmerited favor.

I Love Coffee: Over 100 Easy and Delicious Coffee Drinks Review

I Love Coffee: Over 100 Easy and Delicious Coffee Drinks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I work part-time as a barista, and I picked up this book to get some ideas for flavor combinations that we could introduce into our cafe. Certainly, this book has tons, featuring unusual flavor combinations- think chocolate/orange/hazelnut- and also holiday ideas (eggnog for Christmas, creme de Menthe for St. Patrick's etc.) as well as the classics. Even more importantly, it gives you the know-how to make your favorite latte combinations at home. As odd as it may seem, one of my favorite things to do at work is to steam milk- I love the look and feel of the foam. Zimmer explains how to do that almost perfectly using a pan, a whisk or handheld mixer and your stovetop. (Sadly, this doesn't work as well for me with soymilk, but with practice I'm sure I'll get it.) She also explained how to do a stovetop espresso with the classic Bialetti espresso maker. Since it retails for about $35, that's a heck of a lot cheaper than a souped up espresso machine and would almost definitely pay for itself after about ten lattes; you may never need to go to your local cafe again.
However, I disagreed with her instructions for many of the flavored lattes and mochas. She advises pouring in the milk first and then the syrups and espressos; I find the flavor is distributed better if the shot and syrup are in first and then followed by the milk. But that's probably more a matter of preference than anything else- your results may differ.
This is also a comprehensive reference for beans and roasting, and she even gives instructions for roasting your own beans at home. Seriously, she leaves the reader pretty much no excuse not to have the best cafe-level coffee in your own home.
Highly recommended.

Along with Rick Steves' London Guide, the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, & a London A To Z street guide, this book will always be on my "Must Bring" list for the Metrop. 15+ walking tours makes for plenty of exercise, whether walking, sightseeing, or my personal fave, performing pint curls. I looked all over London before finding it at Stanfords(a great travel bookshop) between Covent Garden & Charing Cross Rd., as this was not available on Amazon. Now it is, & your travels to London are the better for it. One tip: Mr. Bruning's tours all start at a given point(don't they all?). By using multimap.co.uk I did my own tours, by setting the tours from postcode to postcode, so after an afternoon at the British Museum, I was itinerized from there(actually, beginning at the Museum Tavern pub across the street) to Soho, to Picadilly. Unfortunately, my local is listed here, but that's the bad news. The good news is it gets the recognition it deserves, and no, I'm not going to tell you. Find your own, you'll be glad you did, and you'll be glad you got this great little book. You can check out Ted Bruning on FLN's Thirsty Traveler show, also. He starts their tour at the Market Porter in SE1. I highly recommend that pub, and this book. Cheers!

Little Flowers Review

Little Flowers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The story begins when the life of a noted abortion physician is tragically cut short by murder. However, this is much more than your standard murder mystery. Kathryn Lively has written a wonderful depiction of a family and community caught up in the throes of murder, set against the backdrop of the abortion issue. The story leads readers to the Merwin family, and their daughter Monica who finds herself with an unwanted pregnancy, thus incurring a crisis in faith. But "Little Flowers" is not as predictable as it would seem, having its own fair share of twists and turns before the last page.
Written from a Pro-Life, Catholic viewpoint, "Little Flowers" is a refreshing break from pro-abortion rhetoric, and a return to traditional family values so lacking in today's world. Although Ms. Lively's characters have many problems, these problems are worked out through love, temperance and a good deal of prayer.
If you are looking for something new and different, with a return to moral values and traditional family cohesion, "Little Flowers" is the book for you. It may be shared with family and friends, and would be an especially good book for today's teens.
