W.E. Butts is a distinguished poet and a recipient of numerous awards in that field. He is also a good friend of mine.
W.E. is a New England-based writer who presently resides in New Hampshire. His poems have been published in several magazines and anthologies, such as the Atlanta Review, Mid-American Review, Poetry East, The 1997 Anthology of Magazine Verse, Open Door: A Poet Lore Anthology 1980-96, Under the Legislature of Stars: 62 New Hampshire Poets, and Heartbeat of New England: Contemporary Nature Poetry.
His latest book, "Sunday Evening at the Stardust Cafe", was chosen as a finalist for the 2005 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry from the University of California/Fresno, and won the Iowa Source Poetry Book Prize. He has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and received awards for the Massachusetts Artists Foundations and New England Writers. He is the author of seven previous poetry collections, including "Movies in a Small Town" (Mellen Poetry Press), which was nominated for the 1997 Jane Kenyon Outstanding Book of the Year Award, and a chapbook, "Sunday Factory," from Finishing Line Press. W.E. Butts also edits, together with his wife, the poet S Stephanie, the literary journal Crying Sky: Poetry & Conversation, featuring (among many others) works by Guggenheim Fellowship Recipient David Wojahn.
And yet... W.E. Butts writes poetry that resonates with the general reader who may not be very well versed in the esoteric language of poetry. This would include yours truly. I think that anyone can appreciate W.E.'s ability to transform the average person's daily events to a level of adventure, significance, and self-fulfillment.
The poems in this book are more like stories than metaphorical or symbolic expressions of feelings. W.E. Butts doesn't need to write about feelings, thoughts, things, and experiences for which there are no easy words, because his poems convey everyday occurrences that anyone has experienced in their lifetime, and transcends them into adventures--adventures of the mind, adventures of the soul, and adventures of the heart. No one's life is meaningless or insignificant in W.E. Butts' universe, including his own.
I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to see W.E. Butts perform readings, always to enthusiastic responses--including standing ovations. His audiences consist of both learned creative writers and those not generally versed in the art of complex poetry. He appeals to both sectors of listeners. If W.E. Butts were a musician, I would tell you that his music is both highly accessible and very sophisticated at once. His poetry is like music in that sense.
I would recommend this book, with utmost confidence, to both scholars and interested students of poetry AND to anybody who appreciates good prose. However, beware of Butts' words... it could be you!

El Charro Café Cookbook: Flavors of Tucson from America's Oldest Family-Operated Mexican Restaurant

I have eaten at El Charro in Tucson, and the food is fantastic. I spent some time looking at this book and plan to buy it. I was concerned that the book wouldn't clearly indicate how the food got to be some darn good. In other words, the recipes wouldn't have anything out of the ordinary--the secret was in the kitchen staff's know-how. Thankfully, these recipes have some obvious differences from typical Mexican cookbook recipes. For example, El Charro uses tons of garlic--they blend it with water to make a puree that finds its way into most of their recipes. I'm certain this "garlic dosing" contributes to their greatness. Another item that caught my eye is the use of condensed milk in their refried beans--I've never seen that before. Having eaten them I can say it works! Last point: make sure you try the barbacoa recipe. El Charro's barbacoa enchiladas were so delicious I nearly fell off my chair in the dining room. They use pickling spice in the recipe--another gem. The food is great....and the book is different enough to warrant adding this to the shelf next to Rick Bayless and Diana Kennedy.

A Roadfood' Cookbook

The colorful history of El Charro Cafe and the 150 recipes for vibrant, exciting Mexican food make this book as unique and entertaining as the80-year-old restaurant itself. It is rumored that in the 1940s, founder MonicaFlin would sit on the El Charro patio, sipping martinis from teacups and playingcards with John Wayne, who was in Tucson to film westerns. Today the restaurantis run by Carlotta Flores and her husband, Ray. The El Charro Cafe, America'soldest family-operated Mexican restaurant, is located in a house built in the1890s by Monica's father (who was also Carlotta's great-grandfather). Therestaurant's signature dish is Carne Seca Beef, a Tucson passion. The beef iscured high above the restaurant's patio where strips of thin-sliced tenderloinhang in an open metal cage.

Old favorites and creative new Mexican dishes that are enjoyable to cook andto serve fill the book.

The greatest restaurants in America are its wonderful independent regionalrestaurants. And there are no greater experts on America's regional restaurantsthan Michael and Jane Stern. A refreshingly wholesome and delicious approach to cooking and baking that avoids the trendiness of other recent books. Ballon presents an eclectic mix of simple but sophisticated dishes, both regional and international, with ingredient lists that are generally kept to well below ten readily available items. Recipes are preceded by brief introductions that provide interesting factoids, tips on selecting the key ingredient, simple keys to success, and personal perspectives on the dish. Additionally, Ballon describes the cooking steps in easy-to-follow prose, clearly explaining and often illustrating special techniques. As enjoyable as the dishes are to make and eat are the "Chef's Essays," in which Ballon shares his no-nonsense reflections on food culture and the art of cooking in general. This is a book for true food lovers and perfect for both practiced and inexperienced cooks alike. Get this book if you want to impress your family and friends!

Cafe Life Florence: A Guidebook to the Cafes & Bars of the Renaissance Treasure Review

Cafe Life Florence: A Guidebook to the Cafes and Bars of the Renaissance Treasure

I completely agree with the "Knitting Fiend" below. Reading this book before going was a joy, especially the stories about the families who own these cafes, the luminaries who frequented them, and so forth. But almost without exception they were poor places to actually visit: far too touristy, overpriced, super crowded (these places must be recommended the world over!) and, most shockingly, they had BAD COFFEE!!! Was the author off base, or have things changed dramatically since he visited? Who knows? The best advice, sad to say, is simply to avoid all the places he writes about. (NOTE: The same applies times two to Wolff's "Cafe Life Rome." Never have I been steered to such bad, tourist ripoffs. Read the book, but leave it at home and follow your nose!)

Like its older sibling Café Life Rome, author Joe Wolff and photographer Roger Paperno's new book profiles family-owned cafes, bars, and gelaterias, this time in the glorious and historic city of Florence. Reap the rewards of their exhaustive research into the fine espressos and artisanal gelatos to be found in the city that is the heart of Tuscany, one of the world's great regions of gustatory pleasure. Not only will this book recommend choice vantage-points from which to sit back and enjoy Florence, but Wolff's interviews with the cafés' owners make a fascinating read. It seems the gregarious owners of these establishments can't help but sprinkle their information about the ancient freezing systems for the gelato or the best sources for coffee beans with local customs (such as one involving oxen and fireworks on Easter morning), Italian film history (of course), and gossip (about a certain American actor's indigestion, for example). If the stories in Café Life Florence make you want head to the Barberi bar or the Ciolli gelateria to hear some more, Paperno's stunning and evocative photography makes you feel as if you're already there-the steam rising from your espresso, your spoon slipping into a creamy gelato. Florence is like no other city, and Café Life Florence pays homage to its simplest pleasures.

Mom's The Word (Cafe) Review

Mom's The Word (Cafe)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author Marilyn Griffith has penned a novel that captures whatt all mothers have felt at some point in their lives raising their children. If only the children did not say "Mom" for just a little while, mothers will not have to worry about who does not have something, need something, want something or all three. In addition to the children, motherhood is sometimes hard to balance with marriage and all the other things that come with running a household.
Karol and Rob Simons had to adjust to the fact that their next-door neighbors and best friends moved away, not to mention, the new couple who bought their home was destroying long held memories and fellowship built between the two families. Karol's safety net and support of her friends was gone, and doubt as to whether she could handle motherhood alone was put to the test. It seemed her three children were calling her more often, and the break she was used to receiving when the children would go next door was gone. How would she ever pull it together?
Once the new neighbors moved in, being neighborly would become another challenge for the Simon family, but God had a way of smoothing the waters, opening doors and making ways that neither family could have possibly imagined. They would soon come to learn that God had His hand in their lives and the lives of other family and friends all along, even through Karol's three-week hiatus from motherhood.
I really enjoyed the poetry throughout the book that allowed readers to feel what Karol was feeling as she grew and was strengthened through her trials and victories. I recommend this book to all others who have felt the need to take a break, if only for a little while, from the word "mom." At the end of the day, we learn to appreciate the blessings we have received (our children), and pray that we nurture the gifts that God has placed in each of them.Review by Sharel E. Gordon-Love

I loved this book. The pictures and reviews definitely got me psyched for my upcoming trip to Rome. And, when in Rome, I had the best caffe and granita I could imagine.
But...the book refers to a map, that I couldn't find in my copy. A map would've been very helpful.

The cafe is indisputably central to Roman life. Café Life Rome is the first guide book dedicated solely to the cafés and bars of Rome. Instead of relying on city guides with cursory listings, this book, with its rich photography and informed descriptions, steers travelers through Rome's 5,000 bars to the perfect cafe. Café Life Rome focuses on thirty of the best, in four different areas of the city. Some of these establishments are hundreds of years old and some are relatively young, but each has a story to tell. These cafés also offer food and drink at reasonable prices, or a specialty of the house worth a small splurge. Visitors will be able to choose a comfortable bar close to their accommodations, make it a hangout of their own and watch the Romani at close quarters. It may even be a place where Hemingway or Fellini came to unwind, too.

The River Cafe Wine Primer Review

The River Cafe Wine Primer

Joseph DeLissio's new offering has it all--well-organized information and an attractive, easy-to-use format in a book everyone can afford (and can lift). From winemaking to tasting and evaluating wines, Mr DeLissio covers the terroir in a style that is basic enough for the novice and yet interesting enough for oenophile. Most helpful may be the focus on grape varietals and wine-producing regions (including phonetic spellings so you can order your favorites with confidence!). This would be the book I would give as a gift, along with a corkscrew and maybe a nice bottle of Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc Reserve. The only downside is a few fairly obvious mispellings of vineyard names.

Shari Zamore is mentally exhausted and feels a desperate need of some respite. She knows if she remains in London she will receive no mental rest. She decides to go home to Trinidad and Tobago to find her groove and hopefully some uncomplicated loving with a hunk who, like her, want no ties.
Although she is originally an ice queen towards him when they first meet, Michael Chancery is attracted to Shari so he keeps coming around. As she begins to loosen up, he turns up the heat sensing attraction reciprocity. They begin to share a tryst, but she wants no strings while he initially ignored his desire but now demands a lifetime rope as he claims their hearts are hogtied together.
This is an entertaining Caribbean contemporary romance starring two likable individuals with radically diverse lifestyles and seemingly no chance at compromise. Although their story line is typical of the sub-genre, Shari and Michael are an interesting couple; however, it is the setting of Trinidad and Tobago that owns the novel as Liane Spicer interweaves the beautiful locale into a fine tale that will have the audience considering some mellowing (and reading) in the Caribbean.

Two years ago, associate lawyer Katerina Piretti's beloved fiancé, Baltimore Sun investigative reporter Peter Dulaney, committed suicide. Kat has had problems accepting the official verdict, especially since she suffers from dreams in which Peter asks for her help.
On Secretary's Day, Kat takes the office assistant to the renowned ANGEL CAFÉ where owner Stephen Carmichael performs a reading that she can see is bogus until he says that Peter did not kill himself. Stephen hires Tia Melody whose readings seem so accurate she begins to have a fan following to see if she can `see' more for Kat. As Peter and Kat fall in love, they struggle with happenings that seem more appropriate for the Twilight Zone rather than the lives of a lawyer and a restaurateur.
This paranormal romance will make true believers out of the most cynical of doubters that there is another "realm" out there. The story line moves a bit slow at first as Jill Morrow insures the audience fully understands the motives and concerns of the lead protagonists and some support players, and Tia's "gift". This is a special treat, so much so, sub-genre fans will visit ANGEL CAFÉ for more than one reading.

Vinyl Cafe Diaries Review

When I first began to read Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe series a number of years ago, I was struck at the comfort of his writing style. Part of that comes from his training as an on-air story teller. He has a Sunday morning radio show on CBC where he tells his stories to a live audience in small venues as he travells around Canada. That experience with instant audience reaction has trained him in his writing style.
His stories remind me of a freshly turned garden. They smell natural, the people are of the earth. The stories are simple, but when planted, grow on you, like a flower, into something beautiful. Don't rush through the book. This is one best read one story at a time, with time in between to reflect on similar experiences you may have had during your lifetime.

Cafe Chimes Cookbook Review

Cafe Chimes Cookbook
Average Reviews:

Bear with me, I have never written a review for anything & am not sure this is what I should be doing!
Years ago, I taught skiing in the White Mts. of NH. My mentor was a wiry, elderly lady who could work/ski circles around all of us. She kept after me to learn to "eat right" & to show what she meant, I (a professed carnivore with a 'healthy' disdain of vegetarian/vegan lifestyles) was dragged, protesting all the way, to Cafe Chimes. Once there, the tastes, aromas, textures & visual presentations were all too seductive.
Long story short...I fell in love with the place! Kathy was usually up front cooking & the aromas still linger in my soul. As she appeared in the pix in the book, so she appeared in real life. She was as welcoming and warm as her food.
The Chimes Cookbook that I am ordering today will be the 8th that I have bought. With the exception of my original copy, obtained in NH, all have been given as gifts to people (vegetarian, or not) who truly love good food.
The recipes are true to the originals and the food she presented was not only food to fuel the body, it fueled the soul. Casseroles, pilaf, soups...OMG, her soups! The bubbling hot squash soup in the cold of winter.........
Now, 15 years later, with Cafe Chimes & Kathy, & my mentor only memories, the food remains to nourish the bodies, hearts & souls of another generation. Any of her foods are great alone, & for us carnivores of the world, make a great accompaniment to, or substitution for, our meats! ( Sorry Kathy, you never could talk me out of my meat!)
This is one cookbook that is truly from the heart....not created as a 'money-maker for yet another highly paid chef....but created to perpetuate the warmth and fantastic food of a truly unique lady who chose to make the lives of the people in a northern NH town better, by the fact that for a space & time, there was a Cafe Chimes.

This lively, yet sometimes frightening, book is a work of inspiration. Mr. Suna illuminates the less than sexy world behind those restaurant swinging doors with such candor that it makes one think twice before heading out for a lovely meal at the local eatery. Funny, horrifying, sad, and exciting, who could imagine this level of emotional rollercoaster in a book about the restaurant business. Anthony Bourdain, you're down for the count! Kenneth Suna is the new reining champion of the behind-the scenes, restaurant tell-alls!! Maybe I'll pop in a frozen dinner tonight.

Kenneth Suna hoped to become a professional wrestler, but an eight-foot drop onto a cement floor quickly ended his fifteen-year dream. He found work at the Texas Café, a Washington, D.C., neighborhood restaurant and later at White Spice, a high-end seafood restaurant. In this memoir, Suna provides a unique glimpse into the restaurant industry from the perspective of a young man at the beginning of his career.
In It's a Miracle They Ain't Dead Yet, Suna delivers humorous true stories and descriptions from the kitchen. From maniac managers to quirky customers and eclectic co-workers, he reveals all, including stories about the knife-wielding dishwasher, dead rats in the kitchen, cooks using cocaine, and situations similar to "Waiter, there's a roach in my food!"
Suna is not a chef, nor does he own a restaurant. He was an employee at the bottom rung, and he saw it all-good and bad management, the treatment of immigrants, endearing stories, and shocking kitchen scenes. Eating out will never be the same.

If you haven't read the first two titles in this series, go immediately to your library and find them - Everything's Coming Up Josey, and Chill Out Josey. Ask for them to be sent through interlibrary loan if necessary.
In this installment, Josey Anderson allows her lifelong best friend and husband, Chase to talk her into moving to Siberia with their three year old twins. They'd already spent four years in Moscow where Josey worked at an orphanage and Chase worked for a company that was trying to develop small businesses to improve Russia's economy. Now they were supposed to be returning home to Gull Lake, MN, but Josey realizes that no matter how much she wants to go home, her adventurous husband will never be happy helping her out her parents at the resort they own.
So they head off to a small town in Far East Russia where Chase will spend the year studying the community in the hopes that the people's lives can be improved. While Chase is off at council meetings, checking trap lines and going along on hunts, Josie is adjusting to a life without running water while she attempts to make friends with her neighbor who she suspects is being abused by her husband.
As usual, Susan May Warren delivers a book that is both funny and thought provoking. One of the things I like best about the Josey books, is the relationship between Josey and Chase. They've known each other since kindergarten and although they have their rough spots like any other married couple, the affection and deep love between them is well portrayed. Turns me into mush every time and after I finish the book I have to go back and read the best parts again before it goes on the shelf.

In a word ... HILARIOUS. Georgia on Her Mind is a rollicking good book, filled with memorable characters on a rollercoaster ride with life. Macy has a lot to learn and a lot to get over, and her faith walk reminded me a lot of my own--three steps forward; two slippery-slide steps back.
Hauck portrays Macy's dilemmas, and the way she handles them--or doesn't--with a fresh voice, having fun with the characters and the story. There were times I wanted to slap Macy upside the head and tell her to get a grip and get over it, but then so did her girlfriends. Rachel Hauck had me completely invested in the lives of her characters. I needed to know how they got through all the "stuff".
Macy's search for God's will is like ours. I don't get lightning strikes or verbal directions from God. Neither did Macy. She had to keep looking, make mistakes and guess, hoping to discover the right way for her. Just like you and me. But Hauck doesn't hit you over the head with the spiritual thread; it's just part of who Macy is. Not in-your-face or shouting get what I'm trying to teach you, Georgia on Her Mind is a good book, worthy of standing up against any chick lit out there.
