This book provides a lot of inside information and hints on how to most enjoy time in Paris. There are hints on tipping, how to arrange transportation, how to locate a rest room...and generally great information on how to see and do the things one wants to do. Additionally, Rick has identified special recommendations on how to see the high lights of Paris in a short or longer period of time. I love his books and have used them many times when traveling.
I highly recommend this and all of his travel books.

Leaps of Faith Review

Leaps of Faith
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of short sci-fi stories using Christian worldviews, themes and messages. The old "Typical christian book" genre is being stretched and it's boundaries are being expanded by authors and editors like Karina and Robert Fabian and the other authors in this book. I like that. I like seeing what is happening to the industry, the way Christian authors are writing "cross-over" books that overlap Christian with other genres, in this case science fiction. I am a Christian myself, and an author who chooses to write books that cannot be pigeonholed into the "for Christians only" category. Who wants to preach to the choir?
The stories are all well written, it is good solid sci-fi from the get to the go. Well edited, attractively packaged, this book is a great read at a bargain price for all that you get. Buy it, no matter what your spiritual beliefs are.
I'm not sure what one other reviewer was complaining about the book being heavily slanted towards Catholicism being the one and only true path. I'm a Maverick, non-religious, dogma-free, non-denominational spiritualist Christian with a background in Zen training and Taoist studies, and I didn't feel like I was being preached at or trying to be converted at all.

The Abounding River Personal Logbook: An Unfamiliar View of Being Abundance Review

The Abounding River Personal Logbook: An Unfamiliar View of Being Abundance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fabulous! This is the rare kind of book that inspires me to thank the authors and production team for their wisdom, care for the reader's experience, beautiful artwork, practical organization, and thoughtful reflections on personal experiences.
The sound philosophical underpinnings of "being abundance" are presented so naturally that one might hardly notice how profound is the treatment of the subject addressed in this book.
Here is a highly polished network of gems. There is no other book like it that I have seen. It asks tough questions regarding your relationship with money, and guides you forward to an experience of greater abundance at every level.
Its introduction describes it very well: "This is a Spiritual perspective and practice and is designed for people who already have a Spiritual connection in their lives, or for those who are willing to open up to one, particularly in the area of abundance!"
For those who have no spiritual connection in their lives and are not willing to open up to one, for whatever reasons, there are plenty of other money related books which you will probably find more helpful.
For the rest, this book is an uncommon find. I predict that it will become a collector's item.

The Immortal is a contemporary fantasy of good and evil on a modern university campus, with the library as the fountain of wisdom. Who wouldn't want Orlando Bloom as the immortal who must conquer the diseased vampiric elves and save the librarian? The New Mexico background is authentic and atmospheric. Good reading!

Top Secret Restaurant Recipes: Creating Kitchen Clones from America's Favorite Restaurant Chains

I found that the book was a great investment for people who might not have the funds or the patience to be at the restaurants all the time to have great food. Everything that I've made has been excellent, and though I'm sure that the author tried to find the closest ingredients that could be found with ease at your local market (and in comments to the people who gave a bad review that he couldn't find the ingredients out of the country, we're lucky someone has found a way for us to make the recipes at ALL! How's he supposed to know you can't get Mayo where you are and what substitution you could use in its place? ) Also to the person who made the comment about it not being "gourmet fare" the recipes that are in the book aren't supposed to all be gourmet fare, they're supposed to be recipes most people LOVE & it wasn't like you couldn't look over the book and judge if it was for you before you bought it! I LOVE this book, and it looks like everyone else does too! Great Job Todd! THANKS!

Spartacus International Hotel & Restaurant Guide (Spartacus International Gay Guide) Review

Spartacus International Hotel and Restaurant Guide (Spartacus International Gay Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bruno Gmunder is a publishing house that understands quality - of investigation, reporting, insight, design, photography and important information. SPARTACUS International Hotel and Restaurant Guide 2011 is now in its 10th Edition and rather that simply adding to information from the past (the easy way out!) this guide starts with a fresh look at all of the spots throughout the world that cater to the clientele for which the book is designed. Each country of destination begins with a map of the country and the places in that country that are to be discussed: this is matched with all the details about visiting that country that the tourist needs to know - currency, climate, languages, international access code, etc. This basic information then opens into photographs of hotels, hideaways, restaurants and clubs, beaches if any, resorts, and a running line about the sociopolitical climate.
The opening pages of the book are in German, English, Spanish and French and offer explanations for the many symbols used throughout the guide that make using this tool very user-friendly. Cross-referencing is simplified by the registers in the back of the book. For the traveler who wants to know about friendly spaces and accompanying information that make the difference between a great experience and a disappointing one, this SPARTACUS GUIDE is the finest one yet published. A Daughter's Inheritance (Broadmoor Legacy, Book 1) Review

A Daughter's Inheritance (Broadmoor Legacy, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fanny Broadmoor is enjoying life on the Thousand Islands on her grandparents estate. She's living a life of luxury along with her cousins Amanda and Sophie. There's also a hint of a forbidden romance with Michael, the family boat keeper. But all that changes when her grandfather dies and Fanny's inheritance is thrown into chaos due to her uncle's greedy control. Will she able to gain control of what is rightfully hers or will her uncle's lecherous ways leave Fanny with nothing to her name?
The writing duo of Peterson and Miller has turned out another historical fiction series. I really liked their other two series about the Lowell mills so I was looking forward to their latest release. I enjoyed reading about what it was like to be in high class society in the 1800s. It was fun reading about living in a rich resort for vacations, going to balls, wearing fancy dresses, having picnics and not having to worry about the outside world. The three Broadmoor cousins are all very interesting because the girls are all different in how they think and act. Fanny is a character where she's very independent in how she acts but because of propriety and deference to her age she has to do what everyone else wants her to do. I didn't particularly enjoy Jonas' character. He seems to be only in it for the money and does despicable things to get it. He doesn't care about his niece's welfare or even his own daughter. It'll be interesting to see what happens to him in future books. Luckily this is the first book in a series because the ending does leave you hanging quite a bit. I'm looking forward to reading about what happens to Fanny and Michael's relationship as well as the adventures of the other Broadmoor cousins. Another fine effort from Peterson and Miller.

The Late Projectionist Review

The Late Projectionist

This book made me laugh from start to finish. An interesting look at the warped world of small town men and their little habits (women, alcohol, film). I learned a lot more about this particular small town than I really should have.

"...A torrid tale of angst set in a surreal little town a bit like Petaluma. Our narrator is a frustrated and slightly delusional would-be screenwriter coping with art, love, and life while searching for a leg up (or at least a crumbling foothold) on his foundering career. Is he condemned forever to small-town Dullsville and his career as a beleaguered movie theater projectionist? Or will he reach the escape velocity attained by his former girlfriend, now a world-class concert cellist? ...The book's true strength, is the hilarious interaction among the narrator's charmingly bizarre circle of slackers, swingers, stymied geniuses, and other miscellaneous malcontents. Howell's gift for dialogue is this novel's greatest asset." ? Sonoma County Independent

The Disciple of Beauty Review

Loving it! The language is poetic, the story is gripping, and the characters are so well fleshed out that I find myself really caring about what is happening to and within them. I was very quickly drawn into the story, and I am anxious to continue!
The author's vocabulary is incredible: I have had to access the dictionary on Kindle several times, but it is fitting vocabulary considering the fact that characters are all highly educated and intelligent. This is a mind-stretching book, not a quick read.
If you love the old classics, you'll love this.

In my novel The Disciple of Beauty, Eric James is a gifted professor of literature stunned by the death of his beloved wife, a man who must somehow evolve from a Don Quixote of secular humanism into a new being, one able to compromise between his previous high-minded idealism and an often harsh reality. I consider it to be serious work of literary fiction, specifically a novel of education. It contains much philosophic thought leavened by humorous wit and plot development, and maintains a sense of poetic romanticism throughout. There is also a bit of conspiracy fiction and science fiction in the mix. I firmly believe that many readers of serious fiction will find the focus here on the deepest questions of life, dramatized in passionate scenes between highly articulate characters, to be uniquely engaging.

The Sun Also Rises Review

The Sun Also Rises
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This, friends, was the single book that so fatefully launched Ernest Hemingway's amazing and long-lived literary career. As such it is as close to being a legendary book as they come, yet some seventy five years after its initial publication, it still offers a story that is also surprisingly fresh, personal, and memorable. For all of his obvious excesses, Hemingway was an artist compelled to delve deliberately into painful truths, and he attempted to do so with a style of writing that cut away all of the frills and artifice, so that at it s heart this novel is meant as a exploration into what it means to be adult and alive. Thus we are introduced to Jake Barnes, a veteran of World War One, now forced by his wounds to live as a man without the ability to act like one, forced by impotence to forgo all of life's usual intimacies, and all of its associated life connections for which he so yearns. At the same time, Jake attempts to live a life of meaning and purpose, one crammed full with activity, work, and friendships. Yet it is within this network of friendships and connections that he must confront his painful circumstances.
Enter his true love, the feckless Lady Ashley, and indeed the plot thickens, for we soon see how Jake's physical affliction has painfully affected several others. Ashley loves him, but needs a virile man who can give her the physical love she needs. While Ashley is a woman of uncommon beauty, she is also virtuous enough in her won way to want the one man she truly loves to be her lover. Like all of us, she wants most that which she can never have, and so she returns to the source of her own dilemma time after time to Jake, her emotional match, the one man who cannot give her the mature emotional love she craves. So they are condemned to circle around each other, even while some of their friends and other members of the in-crowd interfere, compete, and seek Ashley's affections around the edges of the continuing affair. What we are left with is a modern tragedy, one in which the characters must somehow resolve the irresolvable.
Yet for all this emotional turmoil and existential `sturm-und-drang' of the so-called "lost generation", people drowning in the moral anomie and circumstantial wasteland created in the gutters of their own endless wants and needs, it is most often Hemingway's imaginative and spare use of the language itself that wins the reader over. Unlike his predecessors, he sought a lean narrative style that cut away at all the flowery description and endless adjectives. In the process of parsing away the excesses, Hemingway created a clear, simple and quite declarative prose style that was truly both modern and revolutionary. What one encounters as a result is a story seemingly stripped to its barest essentials, superficially more like the newspaper man's pantheon of who, what, where, when, and why, and yet somehow transformed into a much more accurate and imaginative effort, one leaving the reader with a much more artful account of what is going on. One reads Hemingway quickly, at least at first, when one learns to slow down and drink in every word and every detail as it is related. For me and for millions of others, the true genius of Hemingway is to be found in his artful use of language. This book was Hemingway's first truly successful foray into the world of letters, and the result changed the face of modern fiction. Enjoy!

Lisa has just completed a three-month journey in the field with more than one thousand hours logged, two jars of Jiffy peanut butter consumed, more than ten thousand miles driven and hiked, and over thirty thousand images taken to document daily life in the marsh, two including bald eagle nests and eaglets' special relationship with their parents. A poignant, true story about the struggle for survival, the bond between lifetime mates, and the parents devotion to raising their young. Punk Cookery, The Punk Rocker's Cafe Cookbook, Vegetarian Specialties Review

Punk Cookery, The Punk Rocker's Cafe Cookbook, Vegetarian Specialties
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ian Finn's latest cookbook is part philosophy lesson, part bonanza of great recipes and all delicious, vegetarian paradise. Titled "Punk Cookery", Ian espouses the joys of Do It Yourself cooking in a non-pretentious, soulful manner that encourages experimentation and novelty.
So, what is punk cuisine? Basically, it boils down to finding your own voice as a cook and then going into the kitchen and rockin' out. Ian suggests getting to know your recipes, ingredients and tools as intimately as a musician would her guitars and amp. He states, "As you become more experienced working with food, you will become more subtly attuned to the character of your allies, your ingredients. Again, the key is to feel your way to the best possible dish." So, if classical music is all about interpreting the score as with as much fidelity and passion as possible, punk cuisine is all about making your own rules, drawing on the recipes as needed to create your own style of food.
So, the important question is, how does it taste? In short, pretty great. Ian mentions that he honed these recipes over many years managing vegetarian cafes and it's obvious that this food is well designed and conceptualized. In our Brooklyn apartment, we tackled the first recipe in the cookbook, Sambhar, an Indian staple. With lentils, onions and hot peppers, it had a great base. We've been going strongly local with Upstate (NY) produce all summer and this recipe really let us highlight our fresh veggies: eggplants, potatoes and okra. The last was not in the recipe, but heeding the author's advice, we relieved our bursting fridge of the goods and went with the flow. We wound up with a delicious dish, which we complemented with some basmanti rice and fresh salad with chickory and a light dressing.
On the menu for this week will be more of Punk Cookery's recipes, especially the Sun-Dried Tomato Kale soup, the Inca Quinoua salad, the Vegan Lasagna and the Tofu Chocolate Pie. Overall, this is a fun cookbook, with lots of spirit, sage advice and great recipes.

"Punk Cookery" contains over 35 recipes, including Tofu Lasagna, Chimichurri Sandwiches, Basil-Rosemary Polenta, Sweet-pea Guacamole and Apple-Cranberry Bars. Street meets eat, and philosophy meets action, as Finn tells the story behind the punk ethic, while providing you with a host of delicious recipes. With band references, DIY how-tos, and a thoughtful introduction, Punk Cookery entertains the mind and the senses. You will eat well after reading this book. Gluten-free friendly; Mostly vegan; light on the soy. Flavorful, but easy-to-prepare recipes with step-by-step instructions. Great intro with "house rules." Tea In The Library Review

Tea In The Library
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tea in the Library is, as the blurb says, about how one woman fulfilled the dream of many a book-lover by opening a bookshop café in the heart of Sydney. It is not, however, a `how-to' business book! It does give some ideas about how to cope when the going gets tough; how to deal with the everyday crises that seem to be a part of the project; and how to stop and enjoy the frequent excellent outcomes; how to delight in the highs as well as endure the lows.
It is obviously a book for book-lovers. There are fascinating descriptions of many bookshops, in Sydney and abroad, which were visited as part of the `research', and the literary references add to the `bookish' tone. Fans of memoirs will be interested in the narrative of the author's early love of books. Readers who enjoy eccentric real-life characters will find plenty to amuse them. Those who like travel books will find excursions to the Himalayas and Antarctica - places where we find there are also highs and lows to be experienced.
Finally, it is a personal book. We find out what lawyers really think of lawyer jokes, and about the anguish of dealing with unforseen, sometimes catastrophic situations. The writing style is very personal and readable; perhaps a little repetitive in places, but this in the end only adds to the character of the book.
Highly recommended.

Fulfilling the dream of many a book-lover, Annette Freeman bravely stepped outside her mid-life comfort zone and opened a bookshop cafe in the heart of Sydney. Tea In The Library became a beloved haven of readers and a cosy forum for writers. Plus a great place for coffee - and nineteen varieties of tea. But behind the scenes were anxieties large and small, frustrations, challenges, and - now and again - glorious moments of success. Welcome to retail!'How hard can it be to run a successful small business?' Annette asked herself. 'People do it every day. It can't be rocket science.'We find the answer to that question, and it is sobering news for those wannabe bookshop or cafe owners out there. The triumphs and disasters, the eccentric characters and the myriad challenges of retail are spiced with wry observation and a good sprinkling of literary references. In the end, everyone will have a view on what could have been done differently to save a small bookshop cafe that briefly lit up the Sydney literary scene.
