I really like Rick Steves and he gives sound advice. I suppose this map would have been great if we hadn't been travelling so much by car... We drove from Manchester, England to the Scottish Highlands and this was just not detailed enough. The free map we got from the car rental agency was exactly what we needed. We also brought MultiMap.com printouts with detailed driving directions to each of our destinations. This is a good quality map and gives a great overview, but beware if you're driving.

Lonely Planet Peru (Country Travel Guide) Review

Lonely Planet Peru (Country Travel Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the 2010 edition of the Lonely Planet Peru right when it came out, just weeks before my trip to Peru. Before leaving for Peru I also read the Moon Handbook and Eyewitness Travel, but this was the only book we carried. We did a typical trip from Lima to Cusco, Pisac, Ollanta, Machu Picchu, and then on to Puerto Maldonado & the Amazon Basin. The only issue we ran into, that wasn't the fault of Lonely Planet, was that the major flooding in early 2010 that wiped out the railroads for several months from Cusco to Aguas Callientes (Machu Picchu) caused a lot of unknowns when dealing with Perurail. This edition was not without its inaccuracies though. For example, at the time of our visit, you could not buy entrance tickets at the entrance to Machu Picchu; you had to buy them below at the MP ticket office in Aguas Callientes (which is only a recommended option by Lonely Planet). They should also point out that the ATM's in Aguas Callientes seem to never have cash, so have enough beforehand.
We tried several of Lonely Planet's "picks" for restaurants and hotels, and definitely agree with their recommendations. Price guidelines for hotels and food were useful and fairly accurate too. Knowing what a bus or cab should cost before getting onboard was very helpful. The book also had some good recommendations for hikes and side-trips that I didn't see in the other books I read. I will say that the Moon Travel book has a lot of good recommendations that we took as well. Traveling in Peru is not very complicated, but we made good use of this guide and I would recommend it. Peru is an amazing place to travel and the 2010 Lonely Planet guide helped a lot.

Beryl Smeeton wrote two extraordinary memoirs of her unusually adventurous life. "Winter Shoes in Springtime" recounts her journey home from England, alone, in the 1930's, by local transportation, through Persia and Russia, and later through China and SE Asia.
Contrary to the Amazon Editorial Review, it does not have anything whatsoever to do with "Elizabeth's" culinary adventures in British Columbia.

Lonely Planet Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands (Country Travel Guide)

I spent two months in Ecuador (including about a month in Cuenca) with this guidebook and was overall pretty satisfied with it. In general, the hotel recommendations were good, and there was good information about interesting things to see and do. Even places that aren't super touristy, I was generally impressed with its coverage. It failed to note several interesting festivals that I attended, so I think that coverage of events could probably be improved. On the whole a solid four stars.

Rick Steves' Amsterdam, Bruges & Brussels Review

Rick Steves' Amsterdam, Bruges and Brussels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rick Steves (and his "silent" partner Gene Openshaw) have established a successful travel-book franchise by writing primarily for on-a-budget travelers. The conversational, reassuring "Good Ol' Rick" tone of the books seems to be intended to allay the anxiety many people feel about traveling in other countries.
The Amsterdam book, like the others, does best with the sightseeing aspects of travel, highlighting the "must-see" attractions and going into detail about what it is you're seeing when you're there. I'm not as impressed with his choices for lodging and meals -- I didn't find it helpful to know, for example, that there's a good snack bar in the Amsterdam train station.
The detailed information about the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and even the Red Light District proved to be accurate. I find the writing by Rick and his colleagues to be entertaining and (with the one caveat mentioned above) helpful.

Williams-Sonoma Foods of the World: Paris: Authentic Recipes Celebrating the Foods of the World Review

Williams-Sonoma Foods of the World: Paris: Authentic Recipes Celebrating the Foods of the World
Average Reviews:

This cookbook was an enjoyable read, but more as a reference work on the food of Paris than a comprehensive cookbook of Parisian dishes. The pictures are gorgeous and inspiring, but the recipes limited in number. It covers in great detail the everyday foods that make Paris so wonderful --- the different types of cheese, bread, coffee, etc.
As a cookbook, it's quite limited and far from comprehensive. It is, however, quite refreshing to have a cookbook with such detailed information on the regional background of Paris to whet your appetite for the recipes.

Moon Pacific Northwest Camping: The Complete Guide to Tent and RV Camping in Washington and Oregon (Moon Outdoors) Review

Moon Pacific Northwest Camping: The Complete Guide to Tent and RV Camping in Washington and Oregon (Moon Outdoors)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As indicated by reviewers of earlier editions, the Moon Outdoors (previously Foghorn Outdoors) series of campground guides is not without flaws. Even so, we know of no directories which do a better job of addressing campground aesthetics than these wonderful guides. In our experience, the look and feel of a campground is often the single greatest factor influencing the quality of a camping experience . . . and the factor totally ignored by nearly all other campground guides.
There are a number of directories which rate facilities, provide directions, tell you how to make reservations and give you an idea of the cost for a night's stay in a specific campground. This series gives similar basic information and then goes beyond that. This guides from Moon Outdoors actually gives you a feel of what it is like to stay in a specific campground - a bit of a narrative description and a "scenic beauty rating" for each campground plus information about nearby recreation opportunities. We like that a lot.
Have we found instances where we liked a campground more or less than the book's author? Of course. Tastes differ and things change over time. Even so, we would rather have an admittedly subjective rating of a campground's intangibles than to have nothing to go on but a recitation of facts and figures.
Are the Moon Outdoors Guides the only ones we use? No. But they are ALWAYS the first place we turn when selecting a destination campground.

Rick Steves' Budapest Review

Rick Steves' Budapest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Slick Rick's books for three trips: Spain, Prague, and Budapest and found this edition to be the most insightful. (Probably because he has a co author on this one).
The book does a good job making sure you know enough about the layout of the city, where the more important monuments, attractions, and must-sees items are at. I'd say slightly above average against many of the travel books you can buy. The add value with Rick's book is that he goes into details with some places (even more so then the literature provide by the actual sight). For example, the "House of Terror" description were so insightful and over and beyond what the on site literature had to offer.
The subway system can be difficult to read in Budapest especially since the end lines are not shown on a lot of the map around the city. Rick's basic diagrams were easy to read and got up around without having to use too much brain power.
The MOST HELPFUL tips Rick has to offer are with places to eat at. A great vacation either be amplified or damped by the food you eat. Also, the process of finding a good restaurant can add even more stress for the ordinary travelers. All of the places we visited in Budapest per he recommendation were unique with good food and prices in tow.
I'm a fan of his book even thought he can get a little too historical, political, and philosophical at times. Aside from that aspect, his suggestions never disappointed.

Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Dining Guide 2009 Review

Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Dining Guide 2009
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Birnbaum's Dining Guide is a fun little book to have for your Disney World dining experiences in 2009. Like most in the Disney community, there are 2 main books to rely on for all of your Disney Dining, Food and Menu information: Birnbaum and The Healthy Guide to Walt Disney World 2009: How to Eat Right and Stay Fit in Disney - The NEW Diet, Dining, Food, Fitness and Complete Weight Loss Book.
After buying and reading the 2009 edition of each book, here are some thoughts I have on how they compare:
1) Best Dietary Information: The Healthy Guide.
With its great chapters on nutrition, organic foods, dietary tips, special need and menus suggestions, The Healthy Guide comes out on top. It seems no matter what diet you are on, this guide is invaluable to any Guest in WDW.
2) Best Food Information: The Healthy Guide
The Healthy Guide has the best Dining Plan strategies and suggested Menu items at each Disney restaurant. It also has a number of fascinating Disney food tidbits.
3) Most organized: Birnbaum Guide.
Each Disney eatery is easy to find and is given a brief summary.
4) Most fun to read: The Healthy Guide.
With its witty writing, funny style and blunt restaurant reviews, you'll be laughing out loud as you read through it.
5) Best info on Kosher, gluten, special needs: The Healthy Guide.
By a mile! It spends chapters talking about the best places to satisfay your ditary needs and nutritional requirements along with all kinds of helpful specs that other books ignore.
6) Most up to date: The Healthy Guide.
Disney is so complex that it is always updating its restaurants and menu items all the time. To satisfy the Disney community's need to current info, the Healthy Guide updates its book several times throughout the year to give the reader the most current info on menus, prices and restaurants.
So which one's best? The Healthy Guide is a joy to look at and read and is just amazing in its amount of useful information on Disney foods and eateries. Birnbaum's index is more complete and organzed. The Healthy Guide is more thorough in its coverage about everything healthy inside of Disney and offers so much "cynical" insight that it just can't be ignored, and it has the best Disney Dining tips and even fitness info. I recommend you buy both and start making your ADR's!!

A Redbird Christmas: A Novel Review

A Redbird Christmas: A Novel
Average Reviews:

Today it is almost as if every author is trying to write a gooed holiday book. And while many try, few succeed as well as Fannie Flagg does with her book, A Redbird Christmas. Ms. Flagg does a wonderful job of not only describing the true spirit of hometown life but also how importanrt people are in our lives all year long, not only during the holidays.
When a man from Chicago living on a government pension, is told by his doctor that he is dying, he seeks a place that will be affordable for his last days. Moving to a small town in Alabama that his doctor recommends for the warmer climate, little does this man expect to find the people, community or even a redbird who change his life around for the better.
A Redbird Christmas is a warm hearted and well crafted holiday book. The characters are reminiscent of those found in Ms. Flagg's classic Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe and the setting will place you between the pages of her more recent book, Standing in the Rainbow.
I highly recommend this book as I do all of Flagg's books. They are books to be cherished and this is no exception. It is the perfect size for a stocking stuffer which will give all readers a good time and even better journey to understanding human kindness. And the best part is the characters will stay with you long after you close the pages of the book.
Happy holidays to all and especially to you Ms. Fannie Flagg. Long may you continue to provide me with wonderful reads that spark my imagination about small town life in the USA.

The Sterns have once again come out with a book on the great local places to eat in America. They say they have edited and added 200 new eateries. There are the new places, but I found several examples of previous favorites that I have visited recently and they are still up to their old high food standards, but for some reason they were dropped from this edition - one presumes to make room for new places. As for the claim that it is bigger, it is actually 4 pages shorter than the previous guide.
Previously I have been extremely enthusiastic about these books, however I guess I was spoiled by the layout and quality of the Sterns' `500 places to Eat Before it's Too Late' in which the sections were clearly divided and easy to find.
The restaurants in this book are divided into regions and sometime as you are traveling it's confusing to try to guess where a state is considered...deep south or mid south, etc. The index also would be much easier to use if it was divided into states alphabetically instead of having to page back and forth to see what region you are in. In the old edition - at least in the index, restaurants were listed by town under the state, now they are alphabetical, which does not seem to work as well when you are in or near a town looking for a different place to eat.
These are still great road guides, especially if you are not constantly searching on a lap top as you travel. It's also still a great gift to give someone who will be traveling in order to find some casual non-chain real Americana food.

Horn of the Moon Cookbook Review

Horn of the Moon Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first discovered this cookbook some years back when I was part of a group doing volunteer work in rural Brazil. Most of us were vegetarians, so we took this book along with us for recipe ideas. We were very limited on available ingredients and were forced to omit or substitute about half of everything that was required. Nevertheless, we produced really great dishes from that book. As soon as I got back to the US, I ordered a copy for myself and started cooking some truly amazing meals!
The Horn of the Moon Cookbook has a lot going for it. First, unlike most other vegetarian cookbooks, it does not concern itself with fat content. (A lot of the dishes are extremely high in fat.) There are plenty of resources out there for people looking to reduce fat or cut calories, and most vegetarians, even those who are highly health conscious, are willing to splurge now and then for something really good. (Just like people who eat meat.)
Also, I was amazed by the number and variety of recipes. When I first got the book, I didn't know where to begin. Salads, sandwiches, soups, pastas, pizzas, desserts, breakfast foods -- it all looked so good, and the results almost never disappointed. (The only notable exception was the cashew french toast.) This book will keep you busy for weeks!
In addition, the recipes will appeal to everyone, not just vegetarians. If you have a friend or relative that you want to introduce to a vegetarian lifestyle, just cook them a few meals using these recipes. Or if you are a non-vegetarian and need to plan a meal for a group of people containing some vegetarians, use this book. The vegetarians will appreciate it, and the non-vegetarians will enjoy it and probably not even notice the lack of meat.
My favorite recipe is the one for Pizza Alfredo. I guarantee you've never had pizza like this before! Every time I make it, I'm always amazed when I take the first bite at how good it is. I also enjoy the Black Bean Soup a lot. I usually quintuple the recipe (I have a very large pot.) and freeze most of it to make it last, so I can have a bowl every day for a month, or longer. Also, every halloween, I buy an extra pumpkin (in addition to the one for the jack o'lantern) to make the Pumpkin Pie recipe. That's now part of my halloween tradition.
If you are a vegan, you probably won't get as much out of this book as people who are willing to eat dairy products and eggs. There is a lot of dairy in this book! But there are some vegan recipes, and of course you can adjust some of the other recipes to your needs. The same goes for people who are really watching their fat intake.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. Different recipes will appeal to different people, and it would be hard to imagine someone who couldn't find at least a handful of recipes in it that would delight them. This is definitely my favorite cookbook; I've never found one that even comes close!

The Native Foods Restaurant Cookbook Review

The Native Foods Restaurant Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would love to give this book five stars. When I first bought it, I certainly would have. However, as I worked my way through the book and cooked with more of the recipes, I found myself with headaches as often as I had great food.
Here's why: This book is not edited well, and it is not written with a beginning or even an intermediate cook in mind. That combination spells disaster. In roughly a third of the recipes in the book, vital details are missing, details that might seem minor to a casual reader or obvious to advanced cooks but mean the difference between beautiful food and a disgusting, and in some cases expensive, catastrophe.
Here's a good example. Many of the book's recipes call for a meat substitute called seitan, a sort of gluten loaf cooked in broth. A recipe for seitan is provided in the early chapters of the book. Interested in making at home what can be a very expensive item in the store, I set out to make seitan one day according to the recipe provided in Petrovna's book.
So, I followed the directions to the letter, going through the entire process of making the dough and rinsing out the starch and kneading the resulting gluten ball, a process that takes place over the course of hours. Then, I prepared the broth that the gluten is cooked in - a very salty broth, I should add - and put the whole thing on the stove to cook, a process that also took hours. However, as I put the pot on the stove, I found myself rereading the directions over and over again, hoping that I'd find a clue as to whether or not to put the lid on the pot while the seitan cooked. There was none, except a picture of the seitan cooking, which featured a pot with no lid on it. So I decided to take a chance and leave the lid off.
What I got at the end was a very time-consuming, very messy ball of salt. This is no exaggeration. Eating the seitan was comperable to taking a shot of salt and washing it down with another shot of salt. The liquid had boiled down, depositing all of the salt in the gluten loaf. I had no way of knowing that this was probably not the intended effect until I tasted the seitan and found it completely unedible. Had I been instructed in the directions to simply put the pot lid on, I might have had something to show for my effort besides a huge loaf of gluten-flavored salt.
Unfortunately, there are a ridiculous number of this type of omission in "Native Foods." Slips as simple as forgetting to instruct readers to grease a pan, to drain canned vegetables before using them, or to add more water if a recipe gets dry can leave all but the most experienced cooks with a disaster instead of dinner. Most of the recipes in this book are fun and imaginative, and if the directions are clear they come out beautiful and delicious. Unfortunately, every time I use this book I feel like I'm playing Russian Roulette, so I've come to pass this book up for ideas unless I've got a lot of time and money to buy groceries.
