Delighted to find this book in Spanish, and to receive it so quickly. I read it over a quiet weekend and it was the perfect companion for a cold weekend at home-- meanwhile in Barcelona, Laura and her friends, Dolors and Montse (short for Montserrat, and btw, I adore Caballé!) fought the Catalunyan cold with hot chocolate, hot café in proper demi-tasses with two drops of milk, mojitos served up by a Chilean restaurateur, drank cavas and good wines, ate well, and never gained any weight! The plot is not Aristotelian, but that is not where the pleasure of reading it comes in-- it's in the reading itself. Laura's husband has an affair and his sin feels like an insult to urbane womankind, for Laura, on the verge of 50, is smart, generous, a talented designer, attractive, and equipped with a healthy sense of the ironic and postmodern. Juán, the appropriately named spouse, comes off as a bourgeois lout, while Andrés, the object of Laura's rebound romantic hopes turns out to be not good enough for her-- he reminds one of the soap opera "galán" of Almodóvar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
Mireia Arrate's Castillian prose is impeccable, from exposition to dialog; the pacing is well-timed so you can enjoy an espresso of your own and keep reading a book that captures a moment in time of a particular section of society in such a timeless city as Barcelona.
