Swing Cafe is a children's picturebook with a heavy jazz appreciation theme, accompanied by a music CD filled with classic recordings from great jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Fats Waller. The story follows a Brazilian cricket named Zaz, who hopes to sing in New York. Stowing away on a woman's fruit hat, she befriends a knowledgeable fly named Buster, who takes her to the Swing Cafe on East 54th Street. When Zaz gets up on stage, she brings a performance that will tug at the listener's hearts and emblazon itself in their minds for a lifetime. The art of Swing Cafe flows with excitement, and the text is relatively detailed, making Swing Cafe a good transition story between picturebooks and chapter books. Highly recommended.
