(More customer reviews)There are travel guides written by "professioanl tourists", we know who they are. They are all over TV these days, blah, blah, blah. And then there are travel guides written by those whose love of the place they are writing about shows through. For the new author of the Frommers 2011 Guide to New Orleans this love is right out front. Diana Schwam's refreshing new conversational style and clear enthuisiam for all things Nawlins' makes this years guide perhaps the best yet. Anyone can lists "bests", "must sees", hotel prices and tourists traps. The author adds her own take on a life style and culture that make this city one of a kind. She tells how to join in, relax be part of a city with more history and a culture all it's own, like few others. The people of New Orleans don't just live there, they live to be part of the city, it's music, it's food, it smells, its grit and beauty, it's history, feel and uniqueness. This years guide captures that joie de vie. For it's residents, after Hurricane Katrina this love has grown brighter and more vibrant. The author shares her love of the city and makes past sections on history and culture seem new and renewed. The Frommers Guide to New Orleans for 2011 has been renewed too. Just like this national treasure of a city that we almost lost. It's almost as much fun to read as being in the city itself. Mix yourself up a Szaerac cocktail, sit back and read The authors tales of nightlife, the distinction between, creole, cajun, jazz, zydeco the highlights and low lights....you'll start to feel like you are there already.
