(More customer reviews)It looks like I'm the first to comment on this exciting new book by Chic Gast. I loved the author's style of painting a verbal picture of the mode and characters. The story pulled me in after the first page and I was delighted with the story line as it weaved through Jack Teal's search for a life after prison. Of course there was a love interest that brought tenderness to the evolving story of Jack's new purpose in life helping troubled teens integrate back into society. I highly recommend Magnolia Cafe as a thought provoking fiction that is entertaining and has relevance with today's troubling issues of health care and illegal drugs. Can't wait for the next book in the trilogy to be released.

When Jack Teal walks out of a Texas prison, his home for over three years, he collects his hidden cash and sets out to continue his former life.On his way to San Diego, he meets a head strong woman who throws his plans into turmoil. Abruptly, he changes his plans and drives to Northern California where he reconnects with an old friend, a restaurant owner dedicated to giving his employees a chance at success. At Magnolia Café most of the staff is comprised of young people trying to survive hardscrabble lives, facing the daily challenges of mental illness and society's repudiation of their worth. It is here that Jack discovers the part of his life that was missing; kindness, concern for others, and self respect. Chic Gast's compelling novel, Magnolia Café, is tender and gritty, joyful and contemplative. It is a profound reminder that life can go in many directions, and some of these directions can lead us to that magical place that redefines our very purpose.
